A hen finds some eggs on the ground. "Oh, poor little eggs," she says. "No mother? I will be your mother!"
メンドリが、地面の上に卵がいくつかあるのを見つけました。「まあ、かわいそうな小さな卵たち」と、メンドリは言いました。「お母さんがいないの？ わたしがお母さんになってあげるわ！」
She sits on the eggs. She keeps them warm. Day and night, she sits and sits.
メンドリは卵の上にすわって、あたためてやりました。昼も夜も、ずっとすわりつづけました。
Crack! Crack! The eggs open. Out come... little snakes! Hiss, hiss!
パリッ！ パリッ！ 卵がわれました。中から出てきたのは……小さなヘビたちでした！ シューッ、シューッ！
A swallow flies down. "Silly hen!" she says. "What did you do? Those are baby snakes! Soon they will be big snakes. They will hurt everyone. And you first!"
ツバメが舞いおりてきました。「おばかなメンドリさん！」と、ツバメは言いました。「なんてことをしたの？ それはヘビの赤ちゃんよ！ すぐに大きなヘビになるわ。みんなを傷つけるわよ。いちばん先にあなたをね！」
The hen looks at the little snakes. The little snakes look at the hen. "Hiss!" The hen runs away fast.
メンドリは小さなヘビたちを見ました。小さなヘビたちもメンドリを見ました。「シューッ！」メンドリは大急ぎで逃げていきました。
