Some dogs are very hungry. They walk by a river. In the river, they see some cow skins. "Food!" they say. "Yum!"
おなかをすかせた犬たちが、川のそばを歩いていました。ふと見ると、川の中に牛の皮が何枚かあります。「食べ物だ！」と、犬たちは言いました。「おいしそう！」
But the skins are far away. They are in the middle of the river. The dogs cannot swim there.
でも、皮は遠くにありました。川の真ん中にあるのです。犬たちはそこまで泳いでいけません。
One dog has an idea. "Let's drink the river!" he says. "No water, no problem. Then we can walk to the skins!" "Yes!" say the other dogs.
一匹の犬が、いいことを思いつきました。「川の水を飲み干そう！」と、その犬は言いました。「水がなくなれば、問題なしさ。そうすれば、皮のところまで歩いていける！」「そうしよう！」と、ほかの犬たちも言いました。
They drink. Gulp, gulp, gulp! They drink more. Gulp, gulp, gulp! Their tummies get big. Bigger and bigger.
犬たちは飲みました。ゴクゴクゴク！ もっと飲みました。ゴクゴクゴク！ 犬たちのおなかはふくらんでいきました。どんどん、どんどん大きくなりました。
"I can't drink more," says one dog. "Oh, my tummy!" says another. They fall down on the grass. Their tummies are very, very big. And the river? It is still there.
「もう飲めないよ」と、一匹の犬が言いました。「ああ、おなかが！」と、もう一匹が言いました。犬たちは草の上に倒れこみました。おなかはぱんぱんにふくらんでいます。それで、川はどうなったでしょう？ 川は、まだそこにありました。
