A dog is in a barn. He sees a manger. It is a big box of hay for the cows. "A nice bed," he says. He jumps in and lies down.
犬が牛小屋の中にいました。犬は、かいば桶を見つけました。かいば桶というのは、牛たちの干し草を入れる大きな箱のことです。「いいベッドだな」と言って、犬は中に飛びこみ、横になりました。
Some cows come in. They are hungry. "Moo! Hay! Our dinner!" They come near the manger.
牛たちが入ってきました。牛たちはおなかをすかせていました。「モー！ 干し草だ！ ぼくたちの夕ごはんだ！」牛たちは、かいば桶に近づきました。
"Grrr!" says the dog. "Go away! Woof! Woof!" The cows step back.
「ウーッ！」と、犬はうなりました。「あっちへ行け！ ワン！ ワン！」牛たちはあとずさりしました。
"Dog, do you eat hay?" asks one cow. "No," says the dog. "I don't eat hay." "Then please let us eat!" "No! Grrr!"
「犬さん、きみは干し草を食べるのかい？」と、一頭の牛がたずねました。「いいや」と、犬は答えました。「干し草は食べないよ」「それなら、どうかぼくたちに食べさせておくれ！」「いやだ！ ウーッ！」
The cows look at each other. "What a selfish dog! He cannot eat the hay. And he does not let us eat it!"
牛たちは顔を見合わせました。「なんて自分勝手な犬だろう！ 自分は干し草を食べられないのに、ぼくたちにも食べさせてくれないなんて！」
