Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a poor man. He lived in a tiny hut with only one room. In that one room lived the man, his wife, their six children, and his old mother.
The hut was very crowded. The children fought all day. The baby cried all night. The man's wife and his mother argued all the time. There was no quiet place to sit, and there was no room to sleep.
One day, the man could not stand it anymore. He went to see the rabbi, the wisest man in the village.
"Rabbi," he said, "please help me. My house is so small and so noisy. My children fight, my wife and my mother argue, and I can't sleep. Things could not be worse. What can I do?"
The rabbi thought for a moment. "Do you have any chickens?" he asked.
"Yes," said the man. "I have a few chickens and a goose."
"Good," said the rabbi. "Go home and bring the chickens and the goose into your house."
The man was surprised, but the rabbi was very wise. So he went home and brought the chickens and the goose into the house.
A week later, he came back to the rabbi. "Rabbi, it is worse!" he said. "Now the chickens and the goose are flying everywhere. There are feathers in our soup. Please help me!"
The rabbi thought for a moment. "Do you have a goat?" he asked.
"Yes, I have a goat," said the man.
"Good," said the rabbi. "Go home and bring the goat into your house."
The man did not understand, but he did what the rabbi said.
A week later, he came back again. "Rabbi, it is terrible!" he cried. "The goat eats our clothes and jumps on the beds! It's a disaster!"
"Do you have a cow?" asked the rabbi.
"Yes," said the man in a weak voice. "I have a cow."
"Go home," said the rabbi, "and bring the cow into your house."
So the man went home and brought the cow into the house. Now, in that tiny hut, there were the man, his wife, six children, his mother, the chickens, the goose, the goat, and the cow. Nobody could move. The animals made a lot of noise, and the house smelled terrible.
A week later, the man ran to the rabbi. He was almost crying. "Rabbi, please, please help me!" he said. "My life is a nightmare. The cow broke the table. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't even breathe!"
The rabbi smiled. "My friend," he said, "go home now. Take the chickens, the goose, the goat, and the cow out of your house. Put them back outside, where they belong."
The man ran home. He took all the animals out of the house as fast as he could. Then he cleaned the floor and sat down.
That night, the house was quiet and peaceful. The children slept well. There were no animals and no feathers. It felt like there was plenty of room for everyone.
The next day, the man went to see the rabbi one more time. He had a big smile on his face. "Rabbi," he said, "thank you! My house is so big, so quiet, and so clean. Life is wonderful!"
