Long ago, in India, there was a great emperor named Akbar. He had a very wise and funny friend named Birbal. Birbal always helped the emperor find the right answer.
One cold winter day, Akbar and Birbal were walking by a lake near the palace. Akbar put his finger in the water and pulled it out quickly. "This water is so cold!" he said. "Nobody could stay in this lake for one whole night."
"I think a person would do it for money," said Birbal. "Someone who really needs money might do it."
"Then let us see," said Akbar. He told everyone in the city, "If any man can stand in the lake all night, I will give him a thousand gold coins."
A very poor man heard this. He needed the money for his family. So that night, he walked into the cold lake. The water came up to his chest. Soldiers watched him from the side of the lake.
The night was long and very cold. The man was shaking. His teeth were chattering. But far away, in a window of the palace, there was a small lamp. The man looked at that little light all night long. It helped him to stay strong.
In the morning, the man walked out of the lake. He was tired and cold, but he did it! He went to the palace to get his reward.
"How did you stay in the cold water all night?" asked the emperor.
"There was a lamp in a palace window," said the man. "I looked at it all night, and that helped me."
"A lamp?" said Akbar. "Then you got warm from the lamp. That is not fair. You will get no reward." The poor man went home sad, with nothing.
Birbal heard about this, and he was not happy. The next day, he did not come to the palace. Akbar sent a servant to his house. The servant came back and said, "Birbal says he is cooking khichdi. He will come when it is ready."
Many hours passed, but Birbal did not come. At last, the emperor went to Birbal's house himself.
He found Birbal sitting in his garden. There was a very small fire on the ground. High above the fire, a pot of rice and lentils was hanging from a tall pole. The pot was very, very far from the fire.
"Birbal, what are you doing?" asked Akbar. "That pot is too high. The fire can never cook your khichdi!"
"Oh, but it will, Your Majesty," said Birbal. "If a man in a lake can get warm from a lamp in a faraway window, then my khichdi can get hot from this little fire."
Akbar was quiet for a moment. Then he began to laugh. "You are right, Birbal," he said. "I was unfair to that poor man."
That same day, the emperor called the poor man back to the palace. He gave him the thousand gold coins, and he said sorry. And Birbal finally put his pot down on the fire and cooked his khichdi.
