Long ago, in a forest in India, there lived four good friends: a hare, a monkey, a jackal, and an otter. They lived together in peace, and they always tried to be kind and good.
The hare was the wisest of the four. One evening, he looked up at the sky and said, "Tomorrow is a holy day. On a holy day, we should give food to anyone who is hungry. Let us each find something to give."
The next morning, the otter went to the river. He found seven fish lying on the bank. "I will give these," he said, and he took them home.
The jackal walked to a farmer's hut. He found some meat and a pot of milk. "I will give these," he said, and he took them home.
The monkey climbed a tall tree. He picked some sweet mangoes. "I will give these," he said, and he took them home.
But the hare only ate grass. "I cannot give grass to a person," he thought. "What can I give?" He thought for a long time. Then he said, "If a hungry person comes, I will give my own body."
High above in heaven, the god Sakka heard this. His seat became hot, which was a sign that something important was happening on Earth. "I must see if this hare is really so good," he said. He changed himself into a poor, old traveler, and he went down to the forest.
First, the old man went to the otter. "I am so hungry," he said. "Do you have any food?"
"Yes," said the otter. "Please take my fish."
"Thank you," said the old man. "I will come back later." Then he went to the jackal and the monkey. They were happy to share their food with him, too.
At last, the old man came to the hare. "I am so hungry," he said. "Do you have any food?"
"I have only grass," said the hare. "But please, make a big fire. I will give you something good to eat."
The old man was surprised, but he made a fire. When the fire was burning brightly, the hare stood up. He shook his fur three times, so that the small insects in it could jump out and be safe. Then he said, "Please eat me." And with a happy heart, he jumped into the fire.
But the fire was not hot. It felt as cool as snow. Not one hair on the hare's body burned.
The hare looked up in surprise. "Why is this fire so cold?" he asked.
The old man was gone. In his place stood the god Sakka, shining with light. "Wise hare," he said gently, "I am not a traveler. I came to test you. Your heart is truly good. I want everyone to remember your kindness forever."
Sakka took a mountain in his hand and pressed it like juice. With the juice, he drew the shape of a hare on the face of the moon.
Then he put the hare down softly on a bed of grass, and he went back to heaven. The four friends lived happily together for the rest of their lives.
And now, when the moon is full, look up. You can still see the shape of the hare there, shining in the night sky.
