Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish writer who lived in London in the 1800s. In 1834, he began to write a long history book about the French Revolution. It was hard work. He read many old books and wrote for months, and at last he finished the first of three volumes.
In those days, there were no computers or copy machines. Writers wrote everything by hand on paper, and Carlyle had only one copy of his work. He did not even have his notes.
Carlyle had a friend who was also a writer. Smiles calls him only a literary neighbor, but we know today that he was the famous thinker John Stuart Mill. Mill was very interested in the French Revolution, so Carlyle lent him the whole first volume to read.
Weeks went by. The printers were waiting for the book, so Carlyle asked for it back. Then terrible news came. Someone left the book on the floor of a sitting room and forgot about it. A servant girl found it and thought it was just a pile of waste paper. She used it to start the fires in the kitchen and the sitting room. Months of work were gone in a few minutes.
We can only imagine how Carlyle felt. All those days of reading and thinking, all those pages, all the beautiful sentences he found, were now only smoke. And he had no copy and no notes.
What could he do? Some people might give up. Others might stay angry for years. But Carlyle saw that there was only one answer: he had to write the book again. So he sat down and started from the beginning.
It was terribly hard. He had to remember facts, ideas and even sentences from the lost book. Many of them were already gone from his memory. Writing the book the first time was a pleasure. Writing it the second time was pain. But he did not stop.
At last, in 1837, The French Revolution was published. It made Carlyle famous, and many people still think it is one of the great history books in English. Samuel Smiles told this story in Self-Help. He said that there have been very few examples of a strong will that were greater than this.
Carlyle's story teaches us an important lesson. We cannot control every accident in life. Rats eat drawings, servants burn books, and computers crash. But we can control what we do next. Carlyle could not bring back the burned pages, but he could pick up his pen again.
Try this today. If you lose some work, such as a report or a drawing, or if something you made breaks, don't spend too long feeling sorry. Take a short break, then start again. You may find, like Carlyle, that the second version is stronger than the first. And if you do something important on a computer, save a copy!
