A long time ago, there were men on the Earth, but there were no women. One day, Zeus, the king of the gods, decided to make the first woman.
All the gods helped. One god made her from earth and water. One goddess gave her beauty. Another gave her a sweet voice. Another taught her to weave and sing. And one god gave her a very curious mind. They named her Pandora, which means "all gifts."
Zeus sent Pandora down to the Earth to marry a kind man named Epimetheus. Before she left, Zeus gave her a beautiful wooden box. It was closed with a heavy lid and a golden rope.
"This is a wedding present," Zeus said. "But listen to me, Pandora. Never open this box. Never."
"I won't," said Pandora. "I promise."
Pandora and Epimetheus were very happy together. In those days, life on Earth was easy. Nobody was ever sick. Nobody grew old or felt sad. People did not fight, and they did not cry.
But every day, Pandora looked at the box. "What is inside?" she thought. "Maybe there are jewels. Maybe there are beautiful dresses. Why can't I look?"
Sometimes, when she was alone, she put her ear on the box. She thought she heard little voices inside. "Let us out," they seemed to whisper. "Let us out, Pandora."
Pandora tried to forget about it. She walked in the garden. She worked at her weaving. But she could not stop thinking about the box.
One afternoon, Epimetheus went out, and Pandora was alone again. She looked at the box for a long time. "Just one little look," she said. "I will open it a tiny bit and close it again. Nobody will know."
Her hands were shaking. She untied the golden rope and slowly lifted the lid.
Whoosh! Out flew hundreds of small, dark things with wings like bats. They were sickness and pain. They were anger, fear, and sorrow. They were lies and fighting and growing old. They flew around the room, and then they flew out of the window into the wide world.
"No, no!" cried Pandora. She pushed the lid down as hard as she could. But it was too late. All the bad things were already gone.
Pandora sat on the floor and cried. "What have I done?" she said.
Then she heard a very soft, kind voice from the box. "Please let me out too. I can help."
Pandora was afraid, but she opened the lid one more time. Out came a tiny, shining light. It was warm and gentle, like the morning sun.
"Who are you?" Pandora asked.
"My name is Hope," said the light. "The world will be hard now. People will be sick and sad sometimes. But I will be there too. I will help them keep going."
And from that day, life was not easy anymore. But when people feel sad or tired, Hope is always with them, just as she promised.
