Long ago, on the island of Crete, there lived a very clever man named Daedalus. He was the greatest inventor in the world. He made statues that looked alive and machines that could move. For King Minos of Crete, he built a great maze called the Labyrinth.
Daedalus had a young son named Icarus. Icarus was a happy, lively boy. He loved to run on the beach and watch the sea birds.
King Minos liked Daedalus very much, but he did not want to lose him. "You will stay on Crete forever," the king said. "You will work only for me." He put Daedalus and Icarus in a high stone tower by the sea. Soldiers watched every ship, so they could not leave by boat.
Every day, Icarus looked out of the window at the birds. "I wish I could fly like them, Father," he said.
Daedalus looked at the birds too. Then he smiled. "Minos can stop ships," he said. "But he cannot stop the sky."
From that day, Daedalus and Icarus started to collect feathers. Some came in through the window. Some they found on the roof. They collected big feathers and small feathers, white ones and gray ones. Then Daedalus began to work. He put the feathers in long lines, like the wings of a bird. He tied the big feathers together with string. He fixed the small ones with warm wax from their candles.
After many weeks, there were two pairs of wings. They were large and beautiful. Daedalus tied the first pair to his arms and moved them up and down. Slowly, his feet came off the floor! He was flying.
Then he tied the second pair to his son's arms. "Now listen to me carefully, Icarus," he said. "Do not fly too low. The water of the sea will make your feathers wet and heavy. And do not fly too high. The sun is very hot, and it will melt the wax. Stay close to me, and fly in the middle."
"Yes, Father," said Icarus. But he was so excited that he could hardly listen.
Early in the morning, they climbed to the top of the tower. Daedalus jumped first, and Icarus followed. The wind caught their wings, and they flew out over the sea. Below them, the soldiers looked up and shouted, but they could do nothing.
At first, Icarus stayed close to his father. Then he began to feel the wind under his wings. He went up a little, and then a little more. It was wonderful! "I am like a bird," he laughed. "No, I am better than a bird. I am like a god!"
Higher and higher he flew. He forgot his father's warning. The sun grew hotter and hotter. Soon, the wax on his wings began to melt. One feather fell. Then another, and another.
Icarus moved his arms, but there were no feathers left. Nothing could hold him in the air. "Father!" he cried. "Father, help me!"
Daedalus turned around, but he could not see his son. He saw only a few white feathers on the blue water. Icarus had fallen into the sea.
Daedalus flew down and found his son's body near a small island. With tears in his eyes, he buried him there. People still call that island Icaria, and the sea around it is called the Icarian Sea.
Daedalus never flew again. He hung up his wings in a temple and never made another pair.
