Long ago, in a small village in Greece, there lived a girl named Arachne. Her family was poor, but Arachne had a special talent. She could weave better than anyone in the world.
Her cloth was soft and beautiful. She made pictures with colored thread: blue seas, green forests, and birds that looked ready to fly. People came from far away just to watch her work. Even the nymphs of the rivers and woods came out to see her.
"Your hands are magic," people said. "Surely the goddess Athena taught you."
Athena was the goddess of wisdom and of weaving. But Arachne did not like this idea at all. "Nobody taught me," she said. "I am better than Athena. If she wants, she can come and weave with me. Then we will see who is the best."
One day, an old woman with gray hair came to Arachne's house. She walked slowly with a stick. "My dear," she said, "I am old, and old people know many things. Be proud of your work, but do not say you are better than a goddess. Tell Athena you are sorry. She will forgive you."
Arachne laughed. "Go home, old woman," she said. "I am not sorry. If Athena is not afraid, why doesn't she come here herself?"
"She is here," said the old woman. Suddenly, her gray clothes fell away. She grew tall and bright. There stood Athena, in a silver helmet, with her shining gray eyes. All the people bowed down. But Arachne did not bow. Her face turned red, but she still said, "Let the contest begin."
Two looms were set up, and the goddess and the girl began to weave. Their hands moved so fast that nobody could follow them.
Athena wove a picture of the great gods on Mount Olympus. They looked strong and wise. In the four corners, she wove small pictures of foolish people who had tried to fight the gods and had been punished. It was a warning.
Arachne wove a picture of the gods too. But in her picture, the gods were not wise. They were playing tricks on people, telling lies, and doing bad things. Her work was perfect. Every face looked alive. Even Athena could not find a single mistake.
But the picture made Athena very angry. "You have great skill," she said, "but you have no respect. You laugh at the gods. So you will weave forever, but you will never be proud again."
Athena touched Arachne with her hand. Arachne's body began to change. Her hair fell out. Her head grew very small. Her body became tiny and round, and long, thin legs came out of her sides. She was a spider.
From that day, Arachne lived in the corners of houses. She never stopped weaving. Even today, her children, the spiders, weave their beautiful webs all over the world. And in Greek, the word for spider is still "arachne."
