Long ago, after the death of the great King Uther, England had no king. The lords and knights of the land began to fight one another, each one hoping to become king himself. Villages were burned, and the people suffered. Nobody knew that King Uther had left behind a son. When the boy was born, the wise wizard Merlin had taken him away in secret and given him to a good knight, Sir Ector, to raise as his own child. The boy's name was Arthur, and he knew nothing about his real father.
Years passed. At Christmas time, Merlin asked the Archbishop to call all the lords and knights of England to London. "On Christmas Day," Merlin said, "God will show us who should be the true king."
On Christmas morning, when the people came out of the great church, they saw something strange in the churchyard. There stood a large square stone, and on top of it was an iron anvil. A beautiful sword was stuck through the anvil and deep into the stone. Around it, golden letters said: "Whoever pulls this sword out of this stone and anvil is the true king of all England."
One after another, the proudest knights stepped up to try. They pulled until their faces turned red, but the sword did not move even a little. "The man who can do this is not here yet," said the Archbishop. "But God will send him." He ordered that a great tournament be held on New Year's Day, so that every knight in England would come to London.
Sir Ector came to the tournament with his son, Sir Kay, who had just become a knight, and young Arthur, who was Kay's squire. On the way to the field, Kay suddenly stopped his horse. "My sword!" he cried. "I left it at our lodging! Arthur, ride back and get it for me, quickly."
Arthur rode back as fast as he could, but the door of their lodging was locked. Everyone had gone to see the tournament. Arthur did not know what to do. "My brother must have a sword today," he thought. Then he remembered the sword he had seen in the churchyard. "I will take that one," he said to himself. "Kay will not be without a sword."
The churchyard was empty. Arthur jumped off his horse, took the sword by the handle, and pulled. It slid out of the stone as easily as a knife comes out of butter. Without thinking more about it, he rode to the field and gave it to Kay.
Kay knew the sword at once. His face went pale. He ran to his father. "Father, look!" he said. "Here is the sword of the stone. So I must be the king of England!"
But Sir Ector knew his son too well. He took both boys back to the church and made Kay put his hand on the holy book. "Tell me the truth," he said. "How did you get this sword?"
Kay looked at the ground. "Arthur brought it to me," he said.
Then Sir Ector turned to Arthur. "How did you get it?" Arthur told him everything. Sir Ector put the sword back into the stone. "Now pull it out again," he said. Arthur did it easily. Then Sir Ector and Kay both tried, but they could not move it at all.
Sir Ector knelt down on the ground in front of the boy. Kay knelt beside him. "Father, brother, why are you kneeling to me?" cried Arthur.
"I am not your real father," said Sir Ector gently. "Now I understand that you are of a much higher family than mine. You are our king."
Many of the great lords were angry. They did not want a boy of fifteen to rule over them. So the sword was put back, and the test was repeated at Candlemas, at Easter, and at the great feast of Pentecost. Each time, many knights tried and failed, and each time, Arthur pulled out the sword with ease. At last, the common people shouted, "We want Arthur as our king!" and so he was crowned king of England.
Arthur was a good and brave king, and with Merlin's help he brought peace to the land. But the most famous sword of all was still waiting for him.
One day, King Arthur fought against a strong knight named Sir Pellinore, who was guarding a fountain in the forest. The fight was long and hard. At last, Arthur struck a great blow, and his sword broke into two pieces. Pellinore was about to win, but Merlin used his magic to make the knight fall asleep, and he led the wounded king away.
"I have no sword now," said Arthur sadly.
"Do not worry," said Merlin. "There is a sword nearby that will be yours."
They rode until they came to a wide, quiet lake. In the middle of the lake, an arm dressed in white silk rose out of the water. Its hand held a beautiful sword with a shining handle. "That is the sword I spoke of," said Merlin. Then a lady came walking toward them across the water. "That is the Lady of the Lake," said Merlin. "Speak to her kindly, and she will give you the sword."
Arthur greeted the lady politely and asked her for the sword. "It is called Excalibur," she said. "I will give it to you, if you promise to give me a gift when I ask for one."
"I promise," said Arthur. He got into a small boat, rowed out to the hand, and took the sword and its scabbard. The arm sank silently back under the water.
As they rode away, Merlin asked, "Which do you like better, the sword or the scabbard?"
"The sword, of course," said Arthur.
"Then you are not so wise," said Merlin. "The scabbard is worth ten of the sword. As long as you wear it, you will never lose blood, however badly you are hurt. Keep it with you always."
With Excalibur, Arthur won many battles and ruled for many years with the Knights of the Round Table. But at the end of his life, he was badly wounded in a terrible battle, and he knew he was dying. Only one of his knights was still with him, Sir Bedivere. "Take Excalibur," Arthur told him, "and throw it into the lake. Then come back and tell me what you saw."
Bedivere took the sword to the lake. But when he looked at its beautiful handle covered with jewels, he thought, "It would be a crime to throw away such a treasure." So he hid it under a tree and went back. "What did you see?" asked the king. "Only the wind and the waves," said Bedivere.
"You are lying to me," said Arthur. "Go again." A second time, Bedivere could not do it, and a second time the king knew. "Go now," Arthur said, "and do as I ask."
The third time, Bedivere ran to the lake and threw Excalibur as far as he could. Before the sword touched the water, an arm in white silk rose from the lake and caught it by the handle. The hand lifted the sword three times, and then it disappeared under the water forever.
