Of all the gods of the North, the best loved was Baldur. He was the son of Odin, the king of the gods, and his wife, Frigg. Baldur was so beautiful and good that light seemed to shine from him. He was gentle, wise, and kind, and wherever he went, people felt happy. Even the flowers turned their faces toward him.
But one year, Baldur began to have terrible dreams. Night after night he dreamed of darkness, cold, and death. He woke up shaking, and he told his mother about them. Frigg was frightened. She knew that the dreams of the gods were often warnings of the future.
"I will not let anything hurt my son," she said. So she traveled through all the nine worlds, and she asked everything to make a promise. She asked fire and water, iron and every metal, stones and earth, trees, sicknesses, animals, birds, poisons, and snakes. Each of them swore an oath: "I will never harm Baldur." Everything loved Baldur, so everything was happy to promise.
When Frigg came home, the gods were full of joy. They made up a new game to celebrate. Baldur stood in the middle of a field, and the other gods threw things at him. They threw stones, sticks, and spears, and some even swung their swords at him. But nothing could hurt him. The stones fell to the ground, and the spears turned away in the air. Baldur just stood there and laughed, and everyone laughed with him.
Only one god was not laughing. His name was Loki. He was clever but jealous, and he could not bear to see Baldur loved so much. He changed himself into an old woman and went to visit Frigg in her hall.
"What are the gods doing in the field?" asked the old woman.
"They are throwing things at my son," said Frigg happily. "Nothing can hurt him now, because every single thing has promised not to harm him."
"Every single thing?" asked the old woman. "Are you sure?"
"Well," said Frigg, "there is one small plant that grows on the side of an oak tree, to the west of Valhalla. It is called mistletoe. It was so young and small that I did not ask it to promise."
That was all that Loki needed to know. He hurried away, found the mistletoe, and cut a small branch from it. He shaped it into a sharp little dart. Then he went back to the field where the gods were still playing.
At the edge of the crowd stood Hod, Baldur's brother. Hod was blind, so he could not join the game. Loki went up to him. "Why aren't you throwing anything at Baldur?" he asked.
"Because I cannot see where he is," said Hod. "And besides, I have nothing to throw."
"That is not fair," said Loki. "You should honor your brother like everyone else. Here, take this. I will guide your hand."
Hod took the little dart of mistletoe, and Loki turned his arm toward Baldur. Hod threw it. The dart flew straight through the air and struck Baldur in the chest. He fell to the ground without a word and did not move again.
The field went completely silent. The gods could not speak. They could not even cry at first, because their sorrow was too great. They all knew who had done this, but the field was a holy place, and they could not take revenge there. When at last the tears came, they cried as they had never cried before. Odin suffered most of all, because he understood what a terrible loss this was for the gods and for the world.
Frigg would not give up hope. "Who will ride to the land of the dead for me?" she asked. "Who will ask Hel to let Baldur come home?"
Hermod, another of Odin's sons, stepped forward. Odin lent him his own horse, Sleipnir, which had eight legs and was the fastest horse in all the worlds. For nine nights, Hermod rode through deep, dark valleys until he came to a golden bridge. Then he rode on, down and north, until he reached the high gates of Hel. Sleipnir jumped right over them.
Inside the great hall, Hermod found his brother Baldur sitting in the place of honor. Hermod spoke to Hel, the cold, strange queen of the dead. Half of her face was pale and beautiful, and the other half was dark. "All the gods are crying for Baldur," Hermod said. "Please let him come back with me."
Hel thought about it for a long time. "If Baldur is really loved so much," she said at last, "then let it be proved. If every single thing in the world, living or dead, cries for him, he may go back. But if even one thing refuses to cry, he will stay here with me."
Hermod rode back as fast as he could, and the gods sent messengers all over the world. And everything cried for Baldur. The people cried, and the animals cried. The earth, the stones, the trees, and all the metals cried. That is why, even now, when things come out of the cold into a warm place, they become wet with tears.
As the messengers were coming home, they found a giantess sitting in a cave. Her name was Thokk. "Please cry for Baldur," they said, "so that he can come back from the land of Hel."
But Thokk only looked at them with hard eyes. "I will cry dry tears for Baldur," she said. "He never did anything for me. Let Hel keep what she has." And she would not cry at all.
Many people believe that the giantess was really Loki in another disguise. Because of her, Baldur could not return. The gods held a great funeral for him. They laid him on his ship with many treasures and set it on fire, and it sailed out to sea like a burning sun.
Later, the gods caught Loki and punished him, chaining him deep under the earth. But nothing could bring back the light of Baldur. The old stories say that his death was the first sign that the end of the world of the gods was coming. And yet they also say that after that great ending, a new, green world will rise from the sea, and Baldur will return to it, shining once more.
