Li Zheng of Longxi was a man of wide learning and great talent. While still young, near the end of the Tianbao era, he passed the highest imperial examination and was given a post as an official in the south. But he was stubborn and proud, and he had far too high an opinion of himself. He could not bear to serve as a low-ranking official. He soon gave up his post, went home to Guolüe, cut himself off from other people, and gave himself entirely to poetry. Rather than bow for years before vulgar superiors, he wanted to leave a name as a poet that would last for a hundred years after his death.
But fame did not come easily, and life grew harder day by day. Li Zheng became more and more restless. His face grew sharp and thin, and only his eyes still burned with a fierce light. Nothing was left of the handsome, round-cheeked young man who had once passed the examination. After several years, unable to bear his poverty, he swallowed his pride for the sake of his wife and child and became a local official once more. Partly, too, he had begun to lose hope in his poetry.
His former classmates had already risen to high positions, and now he had to take orders from men he had once looked down on as fools. It is not hard to imagine how deeply this wounded his pride. He grew gloomy, and his wild temper became harder and harder to control.
A year later, while traveling on official business, he stayed at an inn beside the Ru River. There, at last, he went mad. In the middle of the night, his face suddenly changed. He leapt out of bed, shouting something no one could understand, and ran out into the darkness. He never came back. The hills and fields nearby were searched, but no trace of him was found.
The next year, an imperial inspector named Yuan Can was traveling to Lingnan in the far south on the emperor's orders. Early one morning at Shangyu, while it was still dark, an official at the post station warned him. "There is a man-eating tiger on the road ahead. Travelers can only pass safely in broad daylight." But Yuan Can trusted in his many attendants, ignored the warning, and set out.
They were passing through a grassy clearing in the forest by the light of the fading moon, when a fierce tiger leapt out of the bushes, just as the official had said. It seemed about to spring upon Yuan Can. But suddenly it turned and hid itself again in the bushes. Then a human voice came from the bushes, muttering over and over, "That was close. That was close."
Yuan Can knew that voice. In spite of his terror, he understood at once. "That voice," he cried. "Isn't it my friend, Li Zheng?" Yuan Can had passed the examination in the same year as Li Zheng. Li Zheng had few friends, but Yuan Can had been the closest of them all, perhaps because his gentle nature never clashed with Li Zheng's harsh one.
For a while there was no answer from the bushes. Only a faint sound, like someone weeping quietly, could be heard now and then. At last a low voice replied. "Yes. I am Li Zheng of Longxi."
Yuan Can forgot his fear. He got down from his horse, went close to the bushes, and greeted his old friend warmly. Then he asked why Li Zheng would not come out.
The voice answered, "I am no longer a human being. How could I show my shameful shape to an old friend? You would surely be filled with fear and disgust. And yet I am so glad to meet you that I almost forget my shame. Please, just for a little while, will you talk with me, who was once your friend Li Zheng?"
Later it seemed strange to him, but at the time Yuan Can accepted this strange event without question. He ordered his men to stop and stood beside the bushes, talking with the invisible voice. They spoke of news from the capital and of old friends, in the easy way of men who had been close in their youth. Then Yuan Can asked how Li Zheng had come to be what he was now. The voice in the grass told this story.
"About a year ago, beside the Ru River, I woke in the night and heard someone outside calling my name. When I went out, the voice kept calling me from the darkness, and without thinking, I ran after it. Before I knew it, I was running into the mountains with both hands on the ground. My body seemed full of power, and I leapt easily over the rocks. When it grew light, I looked at my reflection in a mountain stream. I had already become a tiger."
"At first I did not believe my eyes. I thought it must be a dream. When I had to admit that it was not, I was stunned, and I was deeply afraid. Why had this happened to me? I do not know. We understand nothing."
"We accept what is forced on us without knowing why, and we go on living without knowing why. That is the fate of all living things. I thought at once of dying. But just then a rabbit ran past, and the human being inside me disappeared. When the human in me woke again, my mouth was red with the rabbit's blood, and its fur lay scattered around me. That was my first experience as a tiger."
"What I have done since then, I cannot bear to tell you. But for a few hours each day, my human mind comes back. Then I can speak and think as before, and recite the old classics. And when I look back with that human mind on the cruel things I have done, I feel more miserable and frightened than I can say. But those human hours are growing shorter, and the other day I suddenly realized that I was wondering how I had ever been a human. That is a terrible thing."
"Before long, the human mind in me will be buried completely under the habits of a beast, just as the stones of an old palace are slowly buried under sand. Then I will forget my past and roam wildly as a tiger. If I met you on the road as I did today, I would not know you. I would tear you apart and feel no regret."
"Perhaps I would be happier that way. And yet the human in me finds it more frightening than anything. Oh, how sad and painful it is, to lose the memory of having been human! No one can understand this feeling, unless he has met the same fate. But before I stop being human, there is something I want to ask of you."
Yuan Can and his men held their breath and listened. The voice went on. "I meant to make my name as a poet, but this fate came to me before my work was done. I wrote hundreds of poems, and none of them is known to the world. But there are still a few dozen that I can remember. Please write them down for me."
"It is not that I wish to be called a real poet. Good or bad, these poems cost me my property and my mind. If I cannot pass on even a part of them, I cannot die in peace."
Yuan Can told one of his men to write down the poems as the voice recited them. Li Zheng's voice rang out clearly from the bushes. There were about thirty poems, noble in tone and original in thought, and anyone could see that the poet had an unusual gift. Yet even while he admired them, Yuan Can felt vaguely that something was missing. For these to be truly first-class works, some very subtle thing seemed to be lacking.
When he had finished, Li Zheng spoke as if mocking himself. "It is shameful, but even now, in this wretched form, I sometimes dream in my cave that my book of poems lies on the desks of fine gentlemen in the capital. Laugh at me. Laugh at the poor fool who failed to become a poet and became a tiger instead."
Yuan Can listened sadly, remembering how the young Li Zheng had always liked to laugh at himself. "Yes," the voice went on, "and while you are laughing, let me make a poem about my feelings now, as a sign that the old Li Zheng still lives inside this tiger."
Yuan Can had his man write this down too. In the poem, the tiger said that a sudden madness had turned him into a beast. His friend now rode high in the world, while he hid in the weeds. And tonight, facing the bright moon over the mountains, he could not sing. He could only roar.
By now the setting moon shone coldly, the white dew lay thick on the ground, and the cold wind in the trees told them that dawn was near. The men had already forgotten how strange it all was. They stood in silence and grieved for the unlucky poet. Li Zheng's voice continued.
"I told you that I did not know why this fate had come to me. But perhaps I do know. When I was human, I avoided other people, and people said I was proud and arrogant. They did not know that it was really something close to shame. Of course I had pride. But it was a cowardly pride."
"I wanted to become famous through my poems, yet I never went to a teacher or looked for friends to sharpen my skill. At the same time, I would not lower myself to live among ordinary men. Both were the fault of my cowardly pride and my arrogant shame."
"I was afraid that I was not a jewel, so I did not dare to polish myself with hard work. And because I half believed that I was a jewel, I could not be content to live among common stones. So I drew further and further away from the world, and my anger and shame only fed the cowardly pride inside me and made it grow fat."
"They say every man is a tamer of wild animals, and the wild animal is his own nature. In my case, the beast was this arrogant shame. It was a tiger. It ruined me, made my wife and child suffer, and hurt my friends. And in the end, it changed my outward shape to match my heart."
"Now I see that I wasted what little talent I had. I used to say clever things, such as, 'Life is too long to do nothing, but too short to do anything.' But in truth, I was afraid that people would see my talent was not enough, and I was too lazy for hard work. Many men with far less talent than mine have become fine poets because they polished it with all their hearts. Only now, as a tiger, have I understood this, and my heart burns with regret."
"I can no longer live as a man. Even if I make a fine poem in my head, how could I ever show it to the world? And my mind becomes more like a tiger's every day. What can I do about my wasted past? When I cannot bear it, I climb to the top of the rock on that mountain and roar into the empty valley. I want to tell someone about this burning sorrow."
"Last night, too, I roared at the moon from there. But the beasts only hear my voice and lie down in fear. The mountains, the trees, the moon and the dew think only that a tiger is roaring in anger. No one understands what I feel, just as no one understood my easily wounded heart when I was human. My fur is wet, but not only with the night dew."
Slowly the darkness around them grew thinner. From somewhere beyond the trees, the sad sound of a morning horn began to echo.
"Now I must say goodbye," said the voice. "The time is coming when I must return to being a tiger, but first, I have one more request. My wife and child are still in Guolüe, and they know nothing of my fate. When you return from the south, will you tell them that I am dead? Never tell them what happened today. And if you could help them, so that they never starve or freeze by the roadside, I could ask for no greater kindness."
When he had finished, the sound of bitter weeping came from the bushes. Yuan Can, with tears in his eyes, said that he would gladly do as his friend wished. But Li Zheng's voice soon returned to its mocking tone. "If I were still human, I would have asked you this first. A man who cares more about his poor poems than about his starving family is just the kind of man who falls into the shape of a beast."
Then he added, "When you come back, never take this road. I may not know you then, and I might attack you. And when you leave, climb the hill a hundred paces ahead and look back. I will show you my present form once more. Not to boast of my strength, but so that you will never wish to come this way to meet me again."
Yuan Can turned toward the bushes, spoke a warm farewell, and mounted his horse. From the bushes came the sound of weeping again, as if Li Zheng could not hold it back. Yuan Can looked back again and again as he set out in tears.
When the party reached the top of the hill, they turned as they had been told and looked down at the grassy clearing. Suddenly they saw a tiger leap out of the grass onto the road. It looked up at the moon, which had already turned white and lost its light, and roared two or three times. Then it leapt back into the bushes, and they never saw it again.
