Kintaro is a little boy. He lives on a big mountain. He is very, very strong.
金太郎は、小さな男の子でした。大きな山に住んでいて、とてもとても力持ちでした。
His friends are animals. A rabbit, a monkey, a deer, and a bear. Every day, they play.
金太郎の友だちは、動物たちでした。ウサギに、サルに、シカに、クマ。毎日、みんなで遊びました。
"Let's do sumo!" says Kintaro. Sumo is Japanese wrestling. The rabbit is small. Kintaro wins. The bear is very big. But Kintaro wins again! The monkey laughs and laughs.
「相撲をとろう！」と、金太郎が言いました。相撲というのは、日本のレスリングのことです。ウサギは小さいので、金太郎の勝ち。クマはとても大きいのに、金太郎はまた勝ちました！サルは、笑いころげました。
One day, they come to a river. The river runs fast. There is no bridge. "Oh no! We can't go!" says the rabbit.
ある日、みんなは川にやって来ました。川の流れは速く、橋もありません。「ああ、どうしよう！これじゃ渡れないよ！」と、ウサギが言いました。
Kintaro sees a big tree. He pushes the tree. Push, push, push! Crash! The tree falls across the river. Now it is a bridge!
金太郎は、大きな木に目をとめました。そして、その木を押しはじめました。うーん、うーん、うーん！どしーん！木は、川をまたぐように倒れました。これで橋のできあがりです！
The animals walk on the tree. "Thank you, Kintaro!" A samurai sees this. "What a strong boy!" he says. "Come with me to the city." Kintaro waves to his friends. "I want to be a great samurai!"
動物たちは、木の上を歩いて川を渡りました。「ありがとう、金太郎！」その様子を、一人の侍が見ていました。「なんと力の強い子だ！」と、侍は言いました。「わたしと一緒に都へ来なさい」金太郎は、友だちに手をふりました。「ぼく、立派な侍になりたいんだ！」
