Long ago, a god says to the animals, "Come to me on New Year's Day. The first twelve animals will each get a year!"
むかしむかし、神さまが動物たちにこう言いました。「元日に、わたしのところへ来なさい。先に着いた十二の動物に、一年ずつあげよう！」
The cat asks the mouse, "When do we go?" The mouse says, "The day after New Year's Day." But that is a lie!
ネコは、ネズミにたずねました。「いつ行けばいいんだっけ？」ネズミは答えました。「元日の次の日だよ」ところが、それはうそだったのです！
The ox is slow. So he leaves early, in the night. Walk, walk, walk. The mouse jumps on his back. The ox does not see.
牛は、歩くのがおそい動物です。そこで、まだ夜のうちに早めに出発しました。のっし、のっし、のっし。ネズミは、その背中にぴょんと飛び乗りました。牛は、ちっとも気がつきませんでした。
In the morning, the ox comes to the god's gate. "I am first!" he says. But the mouse jumps down. Hop! "No, I am first!"
朝になって、牛は神さまの門に着きました。「一番乗りだ！」と、牛は言いました。ところが、ネズミが背中から飛び降りました。ぴょん！「ちがうよ、一番はぼくだよ！」
Next comes the tiger. Then the rabbit, the dragon, and the snake. Then the horse, the sheep, and the monkey. Then the rooster, the dog, and the boar. Twelve animals!
次にやって来たのは、トラでした。それから、ウサギ、竜、ヘビが来ました。続いて、ウマ、ヒツジ、サルが来ました。最後に、ニワトリ、イヌ、イノシシが来ました。これで、十二の動物がそろいました！
The next day, the cat comes. "Here I am!" "Too late," says the god. The cat is very angry. So now, cats run after mice!
次の日、ネコがやって来ました。「来たよ！」「もうおそいよ」と、神さまは言いました。ネコは、かんかんに怒りました。だから今でも、ネコはネズミを追いかけるのです！
