A little red hen finds some wheat seeds. "Who will help me plant the seeds?" she asks.
小さな赤いめんどりが、小麦の種を見つけました。「種まきを手伝ってくれるのはだれ？」と、めんどりはたずねました。
"Not I," says the duck. "Not I," says the cat. "Not I," says the pig.
「ぼくはいやだよ」とアヒルが言いました。「ぼくもいやだよ」とネコ。「ぼくもいやだよ」とブタ。
"Then I will do it," says the little red hen. And she does.
「それなら、わたしがやるわ」と、小さな赤いめんどりは言いました。そして、そのとおり自分で種をまきました。
The wheat grows tall and yellow. "Who will help me cut the wheat?"
小麦は高く、黄色く育ちました。「小麦を刈るのを手伝ってくれるのはだれ？」
"Not I," says the duck. "Not I," says the cat. "Not I," says the pig. So the little red hen cuts it.
「ぼくはいやだよ」とアヒル。「ぼくはいやだよ」とネコ。「ぼくはいやだよ」とブタ。そこで、小さな赤いめんどりは自分で小麦を刈りました。
"Who will help me make bread?" "Not I! Not I! Not I!" So the little red hen makes the bread.
「パンを作るのを手伝ってくれるのはだれ？」「いやだよ！ いやだよ！ いやだよ！」そこで、小さな赤いめんどりは自分でパンを作りました。
The bread is hot. It smells so good!
焼きたてのパンはほかほかで、とってもいいにおいがしました！
"Who will help me eat the bread?" asks the hen.
「パンを食べるのを手伝ってくれるのはだれ？」と、めんどりはたずねました。
"I will!" says the duck. "I will!" says the cat. "I will!" says the pig.
「ぼくが食べる！」とアヒルが言いました。「ぼくが食べる！」とネコも。「ぼくが食べる！」とブタも。
"No," says the little red hen. "You did not help me. My chicks and I will eat it." And they do. Yum!
「だめよ」と、小さな赤いめんどりは言いました。「あなたたちは手伝ってくれなかったでしょう。わたしとひよこたちで食べるわ」そして、めんどりはひよこたちと一緒にパンを食べました。ああ、おいしい！
