Two little birds live in a tree. Pip gets up early. Pop gets up late.
一本の木に、二羽の小鳥が住んでいました。ピップは早起きです。ポップは寝ぼすけです。
One morning, Pip wakes up at five. The sun is coming up. The grass is wet. Pip flies down. "Look! A big, fat worm!" Pip eats it. Yum!
ある朝、ピップは五時に目をさましました。お日さまが上ってくるところです。草はつゆでぬれています。ピップは下へ飛んでいきました。「見て！ 大きくて太った虫だ！」ピップは虫を食べました。おいしい！
Then Pip finds another worm. And another. Now Pip is very full.
それからピップは、もう一ぴき虫を見つけました。そして、もう一ぴき。ピップはおなかがいっぱいになりました。
At ten, Pop wakes up. Pop flies down. Pop looks and looks. "Where are the worms?"
十時に、ポップが目をさましました。ポップは下へ飛んでいき、あちこち探しまわりました。「虫はどこ？」
Pip laughs. "The early bird catches the worm!"
ピップは笑いました。「早起きの鳥は、虫をつかまえるのさ！」
The next morning, Pop gets up at four. "Now I am the early bird!" Pop says. But it is very dark. Pop cannot see anything. So Pop goes back to bed.
次の朝、ポップは四時に起きました。「これで、ぼくも早起きの鳥だ！」と、ポップは言いました。けれども、外はまだ真っ暗です。何も見えません。それでポップは、またベッドに戻りました。
"The early bird catches the worm." This means that people who start early often get good things.
「早起きの鳥は虫をつかまえる」。これは、早く始める人は、よいものを手に入れることが多い、という意味です。
