My name is Jim Hawkins. When I was a boy, my parents kept the Admiral Benbow inn, on a lonely part of the English coast. One day an old seaman came walking up to our door, with a sea chest behind him in a wheelbarrow. He was tall and strong and brown, with a white scar across one cheek. He sang an old sea song in a high, shaky voice: "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest, yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"
He stayed with us for months. Everyone called him "the captain." He drank a lot of rum, and he frightened our customers with terrible stories of pirates. Secretly, he paid me a silver coin every month to watch for a seaman with one leg. I often dreamed of that one-legged man.
One cold afternoon, a blind beggar came tapping up the road with a stick. His name was Pew. He found the captain and pressed something into his hand. It was the black spot, a pirates' warning. The captain jumped up in terror, then fell to the floor. He died that very hour.
My mother and I opened his sea chest to take the money he owed us. Inside I found an oilskin packet, and I took it too. That night the pirates came to attack the inn, and we only just escaped. The next day I showed the packet to our friends, Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney. When they opened it, they found a map of an island, with three red crosses on it. Beside one cross were the words: "Bulk of treasure here."
"This is the treasure of Captain Flint, the most terrible pirate who ever sailed," cried the squire. "Jim, we are going to find it!"
The squire bought a fine ship, the Hispaniola, in Bristol. He hired a captain named Smollett and a crew. The ship's cook was a tall man named Long John Silver. He had only one leg and walked with a crutch, but he moved about the ship as easily as anyone.
On his shoulder sat a green parrot called Captain Flint, which screamed, "Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!" Silver was always smiling and friendly, and I liked him very much. Only Captain Smollett did not trust the crew. "I don't like this voyage," he said. "And I don't like the men."
One night, near the end of the voyage, I climbed into the big apple barrel on deck to get an apple. It was nearly empty, and I sat inside in the dark, rocked by the ship. Then I heard Silver's voice right beside the barrel, talking quietly to a young sailor.
"I was Flint's own quartermaster," he said. "Most of the men on board were Flint's men too. When the squire and the doctor have found the treasure for us, we'll take the ship and get rid of them all." I sat in the barrel, shaking with fear. Silver was a pirate!
At that moment the lookout shouted, "Land ho!" Everyone ran to see the island, and I slipped out of the barrel. I went straight to the captain, the doctor and the squire and told them everything. We counted our friends. Only a few men could be trusted against nineteen pirates.
The island was green and wild, with a strange hill shaped like a spyglass. When the pirates went ashore, I jumped into a boat with them, without thinking. As soon as we landed, I ran off into the woods alone. Hidden behind a tree, I saw Silver strike down an honest sailor who refused to join the pirates. I ran in terror until I met a wild figure among the trees. He was a thin man in rags, burned by the sun.
"I'm poor Ben Gunn," he said. "I haven't spoken to a man in three years. My own shipmates left me here alone. I don't suppose you have a piece of cheese about you? Many's the long night I've dreamed of cheese."
He told me he had been one of Flint's crew. "And I'm rich," he whispered strangely. "Rich, I tell you."
Meanwhile, my friends had left the ship and moved into an old wooden fort on the island, with a fence around it. I joined them there, and the pirates attacked us. There was a fierce fight, but we drove them off.
That night I did a foolish but brave thing. I took Ben Gunn's little boat, paddled out to the Hispaniola in the dark, and cut her anchor rope. Later I climbed on board. Only one pirate, Israel Hands, was there, and he was hurt and drunk.
I took control of the ship. But Hands came after me with a knife, and I climbed up the mast to escape. He threw his knife, and it pinned my shoulder to the mast. In the shock, both my pistols went off, and Hands fell into the sea. I sailed the ship into a hidden bay and ran it gently onto the sand.
Proud of myself, I hurried back to the fort through the dark. I crept inside, but in the darkness a voice screamed, "Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!" It was Silver's parrot! The pirates were in the fort, and my friends were gone.
Silver protected me from the other pirates. He told me that the doctor had made a deal with him and had given him the map. I could not understand why. The next morning, the pirates went off to find the treasure, with me tied to Silver by a rope.
We climbed the hill under the hot sun. Suddenly, from the trees, a high, shaky voice began to sing: "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest!" The pirates turned pale.
"It's Flint's ghost!" one cried. But Silver was not afraid. "It's someone playing a trick," he said. "Come on, lads."
At last they reached the place on the map, and they all ran forward. Then they stopped. In front of them was a great hole in the ground. It was empty, except for a broken box and one single gold coin.
The pirates turned on Silver and me. But at that moment, shots rang out from the bushes. Dr. Livesey, a loyal sailor and Ben Gunn came running out, and the pirates fled.
Then everything was explained. Ben Gunn had found the treasure long ago and carried it, little by little, to his cave. That was why the doctor had given the useless map to Silver. That night, in Ben Gunn's cave, I saw the treasure: piles of coins from every country in the world, and bars of gold. We spent days carrying it to the ship.
We left three of the worst pirates on the island with food and tools, and sailed away. Silver came with us, as a prisoner. But when we stopped at a port in South America, he slipped away in the night, with a bag of coins. I think we were all glad to be rid of him so cheaply.
We each got a fine share of the treasure. But nothing would ever drag me back to that terrible island. The worst dreams that I ever have are when I hear the waves breaking on its shores, or sit up in bed with the sharp voice of Captain Flint still ringing in my ears: "Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!"
