It was a truth well known in the neighborhood of Longbourn that a single young man with a large fortune must be in want of a wife. At least, Mrs. Bennet believed it with all her heart. So when she heard that a wealthy young gentleman named Mr. Bingley had rented the grand house at Netherfield Park, she was delighted. "Four or five thousand a year!" she told her husband. "What a fine thing for our girls!"
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet had five daughters and no son. Because the estate could pass only to a male heir, when Mr. Bennet died, his house and land would go to a distant cousin, Mr. Collins. So Mrs. Bennet's one great aim in life was to see her daughters married, and married well. The eldest, Jane, was beautiful and sweet-tempered, and she always believed the best of everyone. The second, Elizabeth, was quick, clever, and lively, and she was her father's favorite. Mary was serious and bookish, while the two youngest, Kitty and Lydia, thought of nothing but officers and dancing.
At the first ball, Mr. Bingley proved to be everything that was charming. He danced every dance, and he admired Jane above all the other ladies. His friend, Mr. Darcy, was even richer and more handsome, but he was cold and proud. He danced only with Bingley's sisters and refused to be introduced to anyone else. When Bingley urged him to dance with Elizabeth, Darcy glanced at her and said, "She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me." Elizabeth heard every word. She laughed about it with her friends, but she did not forget it.
Over the following weeks, however, Darcy found that he could not stop looking at Elizabeth. Her dark eyes were bright with intelligence, and her conversation was playful and fearless. When Jane caught a cold while visiting Netherfield, Elizabeth walked three miles across muddy fields to nurse her. Bingley's sister Caroline, who hoped to marry Darcy herself, sneered at Elizabeth's dirty petticoat. But Darcy only thought that the exercise had brightened her eyes. Elizabeth, for her part, believed that he looked at her only to find fault.
Then a regiment of soldiers came to the nearby town of Meryton, and among them was Mr. Wickham, a young officer with easy manners and a charming smile. He told Elizabeth a sad story. He had grown up at Pemberley, Mr. Darcy's great estate, where his father had been the steward. Darcy's late father had loved Wickham and promised him a good position in the church, but Darcy, out of jealousy, had refused to give it to him. Elizabeth was shocked. Now she had a reason to dislike Mr. Darcy even more.
Soon after, Mr. Collins arrived at Longbourn. He was a pompous, foolish clergyman who spoke constantly about his noble patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. He had come to choose a wife from among his cousins, and he chose Elizabeth. His proposal was so ridiculous that she could hardly keep a straight face, and she firmly refused him. Mrs. Bennet was furious and declared that she would never see Elizabeth again if she did not accept him. Mr. Bennet calmly replied, "An unhappy choice is before you, Elizabeth. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do." Three days later, Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth's sensible friend, Charlotte Lucas, who accepted him because she wanted a comfortable home.
Then came a heavier blow. Mr. Bingley suddenly left Netherfield for London, and his sister wrote that he would not return. Jane said nothing against him, but Elizabeth could see that her heart was broken. She was sure that Bingley's sisters, and perhaps Mr. Darcy, had persuaded him to leave.
In the spring, Elizabeth visited Charlotte at her new home in Kent, close to Rosings, Lady Catherine's grand house. To her surprise, Mr. Darcy was there too, visiting his aunt. He called at the parsonage often, sat in silence, and somehow kept meeting Elizabeth on her walks in the park. She could not understand him at all. Then she learned from his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, that Darcy had recently saved a friend from a most unwise marriage. Elizabeth knew at once that he meant Bingley and Jane. She went to her room and cried with anger.
That very evening, Darcy came to the parsonage alone. He walked about the room in agitation, and then he burst out, "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Elizabeth stared at him, astonished. He went on to explain that he loved her against his own will and judgment, in spite of her family's low connections. His pride was in every word.
Elizabeth's anger burst out. She told him that she could never marry the man who had ruined her sister's happiness and treated Mr. Wickham so cruelly. "From the very beginning," she said, "your arrogance and your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me dislike you. I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever marry." Darcy turned pale. "Forgive me for having taken up so much of your time," he said, and he left the house.
The next morning, Darcy met her in the park, handed her a letter, bowed, and walked away. In the letter he admitted that he had separated Bingley from Jane, because Jane seemed so calm that he honestly believed she did not love his friend. But the truth about Wickham was very different from the story Elizabeth had heard. Wickham had refused the church position and taken a large sum of money instead. When he had spent it all, he asked for more. Then he had tried to persuade Darcy's fifteen-year-old sister, Georgiana, to run away with him, hoping to win her fortune of thirty thousand pounds.
Elizabeth read the letter again and again. Slowly and painfully, she saw the truth. Wickham's charm had blinded her, and Darcy's first insult had hurt her pride. "How shamefully I have acted!" she thought. "I, who was so proud of my good judgment! Until this moment, I never knew myself."
That summer, Elizabeth traveled north with her kind aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner. They wished to see Pemberley, and Elizabeth agreed only after she was told that Mr. Darcy was away. The house stood beautifully beside a stream among wooded hills, and Elizabeth felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something indeed. The old housekeeper praised her master warmly. "He is the best master that ever lived," she said. "I have never had a cross word from him, and I have known him since he was four years old."
As they walked across the lawn, Mr. Darcy himself suddenly appeared, having returned a day early. Both of them blushed deeply. But he spoke to her with surprising gentleness, and he was polite and friendly to her aunt and uncle, whom he might once have looked down on because they earned their money in trade. He invited Mr. Gardiner to fish in his stream, and he introduced Elizabeth to his shy sister. Elizabeth could hardly believe that this was the same proud man. Her feelings toward him were changing into something warmer and deeper.
Then a letter arrived from Jane, and everything fell apart. Lydia, the youngest sister, had run away with Mr. Wickham, and they were not married. The whole family would be disgraced, and no respectable man would want to marry any of the Bennet sisters. Darcy came in and found Elizabeth in tears. She told him everything, and he listened gravely and left. Elizabeth was sure that she would never see him again. Now, when it seemed too late, she knew that she could have loved him.
Weeks later, news came that Wickham and Lydia had been found in London and were married. Mr. Gardiner had arranged it all, or so the family believed. But Lydia, careless as ever, let slip that Mr. Darcy had been at her wedding. Elizabeth wrote to her aunt and learned the astonishing truth. It was Darcy who had searched London for the couple, Darcy who had paid Wickham's debts, and Darcy who had made the marriage possible. He had done it all in secret, and he had done it for her.
Soon Mr. Bingley returned to Netherfield, with Darcy beside him. Darcy had confessed his mistake to his friend. Within a few days Bingley asked Jane to marry him, and she accepted with joy. "I am certainly the most fortunate creature that ever existed!" she cried.
Then one morning, a grand carriage arrived at Longbourn. Lady Catherine de Bourgh had come because she had heard a shocking rumor. "Are you engaged to my nephew?" she demanded. "I am not," said Elizabeth. "Then promise me that you will never accept him." "I will make no such promise," said Elizabeth calmly. Lady Catherine left in a fury. But her visit had an effect she did not expect. When she told Darcy about Elizabeth's answer, his hopes rose again.
A few days later, Darcy and Elizabeth walked together along a quiet country lane. Elizabeth thanked him for what he had done for Lydia. "If you will thank me," he replied, "let it be for yourself alone. Your family owes me nothing. Much as I respect them, I believe I thought only of you." Then he said quietly, "You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever."
Elizabeth told him, with some awkwardness, that her feelings had changed so completely that she now received his words with gratitude and pleasure. Darcy had never been so happy in his life. As they walked on, they talked about everything: the letter, the past, and their mistakes. He had been proud, and she had been prejudiced. Each had taught the other a hard but precious lesson.
Mr. Bennet could hardly believe it when Elizabeth told him. "Lizzy, what are you doing? Are you out of your senses? Haven't you always hated him?" But when she told him how good Darcy truly was, and how he had saved Lydia, her father's eyes filled with tears. "If this is so, he deserves you," he said. "I could not have parted with you, my Lizzy, to anyone less worthy."
So Jane married Bingley, and Elizabeth married Darcy and went to live at Pemberley. They always remained close to the Gardiners, for Darcy and Elizabeth never forgot that it was the Gardiners who had brought them together.
