In the early years of the nineteenth century, when spinning wheels still hummed in the farmhouses, a weaver named Silas Marner lived in a stone cottage near the village of Raveloe. The cottage stood alone beside a deserted stone-pit, at the edge of the fields. All day long the villagers could hear the sound of his loom. He was a pale, thin man with large, short-sighted eyes, and children who saw him at his window thought he looked like a strange, half-human creature.
He had come to Raveloe fifteen years before from a northern town, and nobody knew anything about his past. He made no friends. He never went to church, and he never went to the inn. He sometimes had strange fits, during which he stood perfectly still, with his eyes open, seeing and hearing nothing. Some people said that at those times his soul left his body. But he wove good linen, and the women of Raveloe paid him for it in gold.
Silas had not always been like this. In his own town he had belonged to a small, earnest chapel called Lantern Yard. He had a close friend there, William Dane, and he was engaged to a young woman named Sarah. One night, as Silas sat up alone with a dying old deacon, he fell into one of his fits. When the others came in the morning, the old man was dead, and the bag of chapel money that had been in his room was gone.
The empty bag was found in Silas's room, and his pocket knife was found in the deacon's drawer. Silas had no idea how they had got there.
The chapel decided to pray and to draw lots, trusting God to show the truth. The lots declared him guilty. Silas turned to his friend. "William," he said, "you stole the money, and you have made it look as if I took it. But you may sleep soundly. There is no just God who governs the earth."
A month later, Sarah married William Dane, and Silas left the town forever.
In Raveloe he worked like a spider spinning its web, without thinking. Gold coins began to pile up. He kept them in two leather bags under the floor near his loom, and every night, when the shutters were closed, he poured them out and counted them. He loved to feel them, bright and heavy, in his hands. They were the only friends he had. In this way fifteen years went by.
The greatest man in Raveloe was Squire Cass, who lived in the Red House with his two sons. The elder son, Godfrey, was handsome and good-natured, but weak. Everyone expected him to marry Miss Nancy Lammeter, a pretty and sensible girl.
But Godfrey had a terrible secret. Years before, in a foolish moment, he had secretly married a young woman in a distant town named Molly Farren. She drank, and she had become a slave to a drug, opium. Now they had a little child.
The younger son, Dunstan, knew the secret, and he used it to get money from his brother. One foggy November evening, Dunstan rode Godfrey's fine horse to the hunt, meaning to sell it. Instead he jumped a hedge carelessly, and the horse was killed. Walking home through the mist and darkness, he passed the weaver's lonely cottage. He had often heard rumours of the old man's hidden gold.
The door was unlocked, and the cottage was empty, for Silas had gone out on an errand. A bright fire burned on the hearth. Dunstan looked around, noticed some loose bricks in the floor, and lifted them. There lay the two heavy bags. He took them and stepped out into the darkness, and no one ever saw him again.
When Silas came back and found the hole in the floor, he stood for a moment unable to believe it. Then he gave a wild cry of despair. He ran through the rain to the Rainbow, the village inn, and burst into the warm room where the men were drinking. "Robbed!" he cried. "I've been robbed!"
The theft changed the way the village saw him. People began to feel sorry for the poor, lonely weaver. Dolly Winthrop, a kind, patient woman, came to visit him with her little son Aaron. She brought him some little cakes she had baked, and gently told him he ought to go to church at Christmas. Silas thanked her, but he did not go. He sat by his empty hearth, more alone than ever.
On New Year's Eve, there was a great party at the Red House. That same evening, a young woman was walking through the snow toward Raveloe with a child in her arms. It was Molly Farren. She meant to go to the Red House and tell everyone that she was Godfrey Cass's wife. But she was cold and tired, and she took some of the drug to ease her misery. Soon she sank down in the snow near the weaver's cottage and fell asleep.
The little girl woke, slipped out of her mother's arms, and saw a bright light. It came from Silas's open door. He had opened it to listen for the bells of the New Year, and at that very moment he had fallen into one of his fits. He stood like a statue, seeing nothing, while the child toddled past him into the warm room and lay down on the rug before the fire.
When Silas came to himself, he closed the door and turned toward the hearth. To his short-sighted eyes it seemed that there was gold on the floor, bright, warm gold. His heart beat fast. Had his money come back? He leaned forward and stretched out his hand, but instead of hard coins his fingers touched soft, warm curls. A sleeping child lay there, with golden hair.
He wondered for a moment whether he was dreaming. Was it his little sister, who had died long ago, come back to him? Then the child woke and cried, "Mammy!" He picked her up, warmed her, and fed her. Then he noticed that her little shoes were wet, and he followed the child's footprints out into the snow. There he found the woman lying dead.
Silas carried the child to the Red House to fetch the doctor. When Godfrey saw the weaver standing at the door with the little girl in his arms, he went white. He knew his own child at once.
He followed the doctor to the cottage, terrified that his wife might still be alive. She was not. He looked at her face and felt a guilty relief. He said nothing. Now he was free to marry Nancy.
"The child will have to go to the parish," someone said.
"No," said Silas suddenly, holding her tightly. "It's come to me. I have a right to keep it. My money's gone, I don't know where, and this has come from I don't know where."
So the little girl stayed with Silas. Dolly Winthrop helped him learn how to wash and dress her and look after her. He named her Hephzibah, after his mother and sister, but she was always called Eppie. Silas could not bear to punish her. Once, when she ran away while he was busy, he shut her in the coal cupboard as a lesson, but she thought it was a game, and he never tried again.
The child brought Silas back to life. She made him go out into the sunshine, to the fields and the hedges, where she picked flowers and watched the birds. Villagers who had never spoken to him stopped to talk to him and to smile at her. For Eppie's sake he began to go to church. The gold had kept his heart locked up, but the child opened it, and it grew warm again. Godfrey Cass, who married Nancy Lammeter, gave a little money now and then for Eppie's needs, and no one thought it strange, for he was known to be kind.
Sixteen years passed. Eppie had grown into a pretty, cheerful girl of eighteen, and young Aaron Winthrop, Dolly's son, wished to marry her. Godfrey and Nancy had no children. Their only baby had died, and Nancy had refused to adopt a child, because she believed it was wrong to go against God's will.
Then one day, the old stone-pit near the cottage was drained. At the bottom lay the bones of a man, with a hunting whip bearing Godfrey's name, and Silas Marner's two leather bags of gold. It was Dunstan. He had fallen into the pit on that dark night sixteen years before, with the stolen gold still in his hands.
The discovery shook Godfrey deeply. He went home and told his wife the whole truth about Molly and about Eppie. "Everything comes to light, Nancy, sooner or later," he said. Nancy was quiet for a long time. Then she said, sadly, "Oh, Godfrey, if you had told me at the beginning, I would have taken her. I would have tried to be a mother to her."
That evening the two of them went together to the weaver's cottage. Godfrey spoke kindly. He told Silas that he had always wanted to repay him for his goodness. He offered to take Eppie into his home, to make her a lady, and to give her everything that money could buy.
Silas turned pale. "Eppie, my child, speak," he said. "I won't stand in your way."
Eppie thanked Mr. and Mrs. Cass politely. "But I can't leave my father," she said, "and I don't want to be a lady."
Then Godfrey said what he had come to say. "Eppie, I am your real father. I have a natural claim on you that is stronger than any other."
Silas looked at him. "Then why didn't you say so sixteen years ago, before I'd come to love her? When a man turns a blessing away from his door, it falls to them that take it in."
Eppie went to Silas and put her hand in his. "I can't feel as if I've got any father but one," she said firmly. "I've always thought of a little home where he'd sit in the corner, and I should do everything for him. I can't think of any other home. I'm promised to marry a working man, who'll live with father and help me take care of him."
Godfrey and Nancy went home in silence. "There are debts we can't pay like money debts," Godfrey said at last. "I wanted to pass for childless once, Nancy. Now I shall pass for childless against my wish."
Some time later, Silas and Eppie made a journey to his old town. He wanted to see Lantern Yard again and to learn whether the truth about the theft had ever been found. But the chapel had gone. In its place stood a great factory, with men and women streaming out of its gates. Nobody remembered the old chapel or the people who had prayed there.
"It's gone, child," Silas said. "It's dark to me, and it will be dark to the last. But since you came to me, I've trusted that there's good in the world."
In the spring, Eppie married Aaron Winthrop. Dolly walked beside Silas behind the young couple, and the whole village smiled to see them pass. Godfrey Cass had paid for the wedding and had made the cottage larger for them, with a fine garden full of flowers. As they came back from church and the cottage came into sight, Eppie cried happily, "Oh, father, what a pretty home ours is! I think nobody could be happier than we are."
