In the 1880s, the great Paris Opera House was full of whispered stories. The young dancers said that a ghost lived in the building, a man in evening clothes with a face like a skull, who appeared and vanished through the walls. The stagehands spoke of strange accidents. Even the managers received polite letters signed "O.G.", the Opera Ghost. The letters demanded a salary of twenty thousand francs a month and the use of Box Five at every performance.
On the night the old managers said goodbye, a young Swedish singer named Christine Daaé sang in place of the star, Carlotta, who was ill. Until then Christine had been an ordinary member of the company with a pleasant but rather weak voice. That night, however, she sang like an angel. The whole audience rose to its feet, and in one of the boxes a young man named Raoul, the Viscount de Chagny, wept with joy.
Raoul had known Christine when they were children by the sea in Brittany. She was the daughter of a poor Swedish violinist, and once, when the wind blew her red scarf into the waves, little Raoul had run straight into the sea to bring it back. Christine's father used to tell her about the Angel of Music, who visited great musicians. As he was dying, he promised her, "When I am in heaven, I will send the Angel of Music to you."
After the performance, Raoul went to her dressing room. Through the door he heard a man's voice say, "Christine, you must love me!" And Christine answered sadly, "How can you say that, when I sing only for you?"
Raoul hid in the shadows until she came out alone. Then he went into the room. It was empty. No one was there, and there was no other door.
When Raoul questioned her, Christine told him that the Angel of Music had come to her at last. For three months an invisible voice had been teaching her in her dressing room, and her singing had grown more and more wonderful. She believed with all her heart that the voice came from heaven. Raoul was sure that some clever man was deceiving her, and he was wild with jealousy.
Meanwhile, the new managers laughed at the ghost's letters. They sold Box Five to other people and refused to pay a single franc. The ghost wrote again: Christine must sing the leading role the next night, or a disaster would follow. The managers ignored him, and Carlotta sang the part. In the middle of her song, in front of the whole audience, her beautiful voice suddenly turned into the croak of a toad. And then, as the managers stared upward in horror, the great crystal chandelier came crashing down into the hall, and a woman in the audience was killed.
Soon afterwards, Christine disappeared for two weeks. When she returned, she was pale and frightened. High on the roof of the Opera, where she thought no one could hear them, she told Raoul the truth at last.
One night in her dressing room, she said, the voice had called her toward the tall mirror on the wall. The mirror turned, and she passed through it into darkness. A man in a black mask led her down and down through the cellars of the Opera and set her on a white horse. At the bottom they came to a black underground lake. He rowed her across it in a little boat to a strange house hidden beneath the earth.
There the masked man knelt before her. "I am neither an angel nor a ghost," he said. "I am Erik." He had built the house himself, and he played her music more beautiful than anything she had ever heard. He was a genius, an architect, a magician and a composer. He promised that she could go home again if she never touched his mask.
But one day, as he sat at his organ, she could not stop herself. She pulled the mask away. Christine covered her eyes as she told Raoul what she had seen. It was a face like a dead man's, with no nose, yellow skin, and eyes burning deep inside two dark holes.
Erik fell to his knees, roaring with rage and despair. "Now you know," he cried. "Now you can never leave me!" Yet in the end he let her go, after she promised to come back.
"He is terrible," Christine said, "but I pity him too. No one has ever loved him. When he sings, I forget everything." Raoul begged her to run away with him, and she agreed to leave after her next performance. Neither of them saw the dark shape crouching high above them on the great bronze statue of Apollo, listening to every word. When they had gone, a sound like a sob rose into the night air.
The next evening Christine sang Marguerite in the opera Faust. Raoul waited with a carriage, ready to carry her away. Suddenly, in the middle of the prison scene, all the lights went out. When they came on again a moment later, Christine had vanished from the stage.
Half mad with fear, Raoul searched the building. A mysterious man in a black fur cap stopped him. People at the Opera called him the Persian. Years before, he said, he had been a police chief in Persia, and he had known Erik well there.
"Erik is not a ghost," he said. "He is a man, but a dangerous one. If we are to save her, keep your hand raised in front of you, level with your eyes, as if you were ready to fire a pistol." Erik's favorite weapon was a thin cord, which he could throw around a man's neck in the dark.
Through secret passages they went down into the cellars, until they dropped through a trapdoor into a strange room. Its walls were mirrors, and in the middle stood an iron tree. The mirrors reflected the tree again and again, so that the two men seemed lost in an endless forest. Then the room began to grow hot, hotter and hotter, like a desert at noon. It was a torture chamber that Erik had designed long ago in Persia.
Through the wall they could hear Erik and Christine. "You have until eleven o'clock tomorrow night to choose," Erik was saying. "Either the wedding mass, or the mass for the dead." Nearly dead from heat and thirst, the two men found a hidden door in the floor and climbed down into a cellar full of barrels. The Persian opened one and found black powder inside. It was gunpowder, enough to blow up the whole Opera House and everyone in it.
Above them, Erik showed Christine two little boxes on the mantelpiece. In one was a bronze scorpion, in the other a bronze grasshopper. "If you turn the scorpion," he told her, "it will mean yes. You will be my wife. If you turn the grasshopper, it will mean no, and the grasshopper will jump very high." The grasshopper would set fire to the powder, and thousands of people were sitting in the theater above.
Christine turned the scorpion. At once there was a rushing sound, and water came pouring into the cellar where the two men stood. The powder was soaked, but the water kept rising, up to their chests, then up to their chins. In the darkness, Raoul and the Persian lost consciousness.
When the Persian woke, he was lying in a bed in Erik's house, and Raoul was asleep nearby. Christine moved about the room in silence, and Erik, gentle now, was caring for them both. Later the Persian woke again in his own home, with no idea how he had got there. Some days afterwards, Erik came to his door, thin and weak, with his hand pressed to his heart. "I am going to die," he said. "I am dying of love."
Then he told his story. When the water was rising, Christine had sworn to be his living wife. And when he came to her, she did not run away. She even let him kiss her forehead. "No woman has ever let me kiss her, not even my own mother," Erik said, weeping. "My mother used to run from me and throw me my mask."
When he fell at Christine's feet, she wept with him, and her tears ran down onto his face and mixed with his own. "Poor, unhappy Erik," she said, and she took his hand.
"After that, I could not keep her," Erik said. "I gave her a gold ring as my wedding present to her and the young man, and I let them go. I asked only one thing. When I die, she is to come back secretly and bury me with that ring, which she must wear until then."
Three weeks later, a short notice appeared in a newspaper. It said simply, "Erik is dead." Christine and Raoul were never seen in Paris again.
Many years later, workmen digging in the deepest cellars of the Opera found a skeleton. On one of its finger bones was a plain gold ring. Christine had kept her promise. It was the Opera Ghost, who had loved so much and had been loved so little.
