In the eighteenth century, a ship lay trapped in the ice of the Arctic Sea. Its captain, a young Englishman named Robert Walton, had dreamed of sailing farther north than anyone before him. Now, surrounded by fog and walls of ice, he wrote long letters to his sister in England, wondering whether he would ever see her again.
One afternoon the crew saw something astonishing. Far away across the ice, a sledge pulled by dogs was racing north. Sitting in it was a being shaped like a man, but of gigantic size. They watched it until it was lost among the distant hills of ice.
The next morning they found another sledge, on a piece of floating ice. Only one dog was still alive, and beside it lay a man, almost frozen to death. They carried him on board and slowly brought him back to life. He was thin and weak, but his eyes burned with a wild light. When Walton mentioned the giant on the sledge, the stranger became terribly excited. Over the following days, as he grew a little stronger, he told Walton his story.
"My name is Victor Frankenstein," he began. "I was born in Geneva, into one of its most respected families. My childhood was a happy one. My parents adopted a lovely orphan girl named Elizabeth, who was like a sister to me and later became the dearest person in my life. My best friend was Henry Clerval, a cheerful, kind boy who loved poetry and adventure. But from my earliest years, I burned with a desire to learn the secrets of nature."
"When I was seventeen, I went to study at the university of Ingolstadt, in Germany. My mother had just died of a fever, and I threw myself into my studies to forget my grief. I studied chemistry and the structure of the human body."
"I spent days and nights studying how life ends and how bodies decay. And then, after months of work, a sudden light broke upon me. I discovered the cause of life itself. More than that, I found that I could give life to lifeless matter."
"I decided to create a living being. Because the smallest parts of the body were so hard to make, I made him much larger than an ordinary man, about eight feet tall. For nearly two years I worked alone in a room at the top of my house. I hardly slept, and I forgot my family and friends. My cheeks grew pale, my body grew thin, and every night I burned with a slow fever."
"It was on a dreary night in November that I saw the end of my work. It was one in the morning, and the rain beat against the windows. By the light of a dying candle, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open. It breathed hard, and a shaking movement ran through its arms and legs."
"How can I describe my feelings at that moment? I had chosen his features to be beautiful. Beautiful! Great God!"
"His yellow skin hardly covered the muscles beneath. His hair was black and flowing, and his teeth were pearly white, but these only made his watery eyes, his shrivelled face and his straight black lips more horrible. The beauty of my dream vanished, and my heart filled with horror and disgust. I rushed out of the room."
"Later that night I woke and saw him standing by my bed, holding up the curtain. His eyes were fixed on me. He made some sound, and a grin wrinkled his cheeks."
"He held out a hand, perhaps to stop me, but I escaped and spent the rest of the night walking in the courtyard, shaking with fear. In the morning I met Clerval, who had just arrived in town. When we returned to my rooms, the creature was gone. Soon afterwards I fell into a fever that lasted for months, and Henry nursed me back to health."
"Some time later, as I was preparing to return home, a letter came from my father. My youngest brother, William, a sweet little boy, had been found dead near Geneva. I hurried home. As I came near the city at night, a violent thunderstorm broke over the mountains, and in a flash of lightning I saw a gigantic figure among the trees. It was the creature I had made. At once I knew that he had killed my brother."
"But someone else was blamed. Justine, a kind young woman who worked for our family and loved William dearly, was arrested. A small picture of my mother, which William had been wearing, was found in her pocket."
"I knew she was innocent, but who would believe my story? They would think I was mad. Justine was found guilty and put to death. Two innocent people had died because of me."
"To find some peace, I went up into the mountains, onto the great glacier below Mont Blanc. There, across the ice, I saw a figure coming toward me at superhuman speed. It was the creature. I shouted at him in rage, but he answered calmly."
"'I expected this,' he said. 'Everyone hates the wretched, and I am the most wretched of all living things. Yet you, my creator, hate me too.'"
"'I was meant to be your Adam, but instead I am like the fallen angel, driven from joy for no crime. I was kind and good once. Misery made me a monster. Make me happy, and I will be good again. But first, listen to my story.' And so, in a hut on the mountain, by a fire, I listened."
"'When I left your room,' he said, 'I knew nothing. I wandered into the forest and lived on berries and drank from streams. When I entered a village, people screamed, and some threw stones at me. So I hid in a small shed beside a cottage in the woods.'"
"'In that cottage lived a poor family: a blind old man named De Lacey, his son Felix and his daughter Agatha. Through a crack in the wall I watched them for many months. I saw their kindness to one another, and I loved them. I learned their language by listening. When a young woman named Safie came from a far country to live with them, Felix taught her to read, and secretly I learned with her. At night I gathered firewood and left it at their door, and I was happy to see their surprise.'"
"'In the pocket of the coat I had taken from your room, I found your journal. From it I learned how I had been made, and how you had turned from me in disgust. Why did you make a creature so ugly that even you could not bear to look at me?'"
"'Still, I hoped the family would accept me if they knew my heart. One day, when the young people were out, I went in and spoke to the blind old man. He could not see my face, and he spoke to me kindly.'"
"'But then the others came home. Agatha fainted. Safie ran away. And Felix, thinking I was attacking his father, struck me again and again with a stick. I could have torn him apart, but my heart sank, and I fled.'"
"'The family left the cottage and never came back. That night, in my grief and fury, I burned their empty home to the ground.'"
"'On my way to Geneva, I saw a young girl fall into a rushing river. I jumped in and saved her. But a man who was with her thought I was attacking her, and he shot me. This was my reward for kindness.'"
"'Near Geneva I met a little boy. I thought a child might be too young to hate me, and that I could make him my friend. But when he saw me, he screamed and called me a monster, and said that his father, Monsieur Frankenstein, would punish me.'"
"'Frankenstein! The name of my enemy! In my rage I seized him to silence him, and a moment later he lay dead at my feet. I took the picture he wore and slipped it into the pocket of a young woman who was sleeping in a barn nearby.'"
"'I am alone and miserable,' he finished. 'No human being will ever be my friend. But a woman as ugly as I am would not turn away from me. You must make me a companion. If you agree, we will go to the wild lands of South America, and no one will ever see us again. If you refuse, I will make you suffer as I have suffered.'"
"His words moved me, and his threats frightened me. I agreed."
"I travelled to England with Clerval and then went alone to a lonely island in the Orkneys, off the coast of Scotland, to do my terrible work. But as I worked, I began to think. What if she were even more evil than he was? What if they had children, a race of monsters who might one day destroy mankind? One night I looked up and saw the creature's face at the window, grinning as he watched me. In a moment of madness, I tore to pieces the body I had been making."
"The creature gave a howl of despair and disappeared. Later that night he came to my door. 'You have destroyed my hopes,' he said. 'Remember this. I shall be with you on your wedding night.'"
"His revenge came quickly. Soon afterwards, when my boat landed on the coast of Ireland, I was arrested for a murder. They showed me the body. It was my dearest friend, Henry Clerval. I fell ill again for many weeks. At last I was found innocent, and my father took me home."
"I married Elizabeth. I believed that the creature meant to kill me on my wedding night, and I carried pistols, ready to fight him. But I was wrong. While I searched the house for him, I heard a terrible scream from our room."
"I rushed in, and there was Elizabeth, lifeless, on the bed. At the open window stood the creature. He grinned and pointed at my wife. Then he leaped into the lake and was gone. Soon afterwards my father, broken by grief, died too."
"I had nothing left except one purpose: revenge. I followed the creature across Europe, over mountains and seas, into the frozen lands of the north. Sometimes he left messages carved on trees or stones, mocking me. Sometimes he even left food, so that I would stay alive and keep following. On a dog sledge I chased him over the frozen sea, and I was close behind him when the ice broke apart and carried me away. That is when your ship found me."
Victor Frankenstein grew weaker day by day. When the ice at last broke up, Walton's frightened sailors begged him to turn south, and sadly he agreed. Victor heard the news calmly. "Learn from me," he told Walton, "if not from my words, then at least from my example. Seek happiness in peace, and avoid ambition." A few hours later, he died.
That night, Walton heard a strange sound from the cabin where Victor's body lay. He went in and saw a gigantic figure bending over the body. Its face was hidden by long, ragged hair, and one huge hand was stretched out over the dead man. When the creature heard Walton, it turned, and Walton shut his eyes at its terrible ugliness.
"He is also my victim," said the creature, in a voice full of sorrow. "Oh, Frankenstein! Forgive me! But he cannot answer me now."
"Do not think that I felt no pain, captain. My heart was made for love and kindness. When it was turned to hate and evil, it suffered more than you can imagine."
"But now it is over," he went on. "I will go north, to the farthest end of the earth. There I will build a great fire and burn myself to ashes, so that no one can ever make another creature like me. Farewell."
With these words he leaped from the cabin window onto a raft of ice that lay close to the ship. He was soon carried away by the waves, and lost in darkness and distance.
