This is a boy in Scotland. His name is Alec. He lives with his mother and father.

Alec's mother cannot hear well. She uses a long tube to hear. But Alec has a different way.
アレックのお母さんは、耳がよく聞こえませんでした。音を聞くときは、長い管を耳に当てていました。でも、アレックには別のやり方がありました。
He puts his mouth close to her head. He talks in a low, clear voice. And she can hear him!
お母さんの頭のすぐそばに口を寄せて、低く、はっきりした声で話しかけるのです。すると、お母さんにはちゃんと聞こえました！
Alec grows up. He goes to America. He teaches deaf children. He helps them speak.
やがてアレックは大人になり、アメリカへ渡りました。そこで、耳の聞こえない子どもたちを教えました。子どもたちが話せるように、手助けをしたのです。
Alec thinks about voices every day. Can a voice go down a wire? Can it go to a room far away?
アレックは毎日、声のことを考えていました。声を電線に乗せて送れないだろうか。遠く離れた部屋まで届けられないだろうか。
He works and works. One day, he talks into his new machine. "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you."

Watson is in another room. He hears the words! He runs to Alec.
