「She's so pretty!」
American Heritage Dictionary(AHD)も、中世の英語の意味を「clever, fine, handsome(巧みな、りっぱな、見た目がいい)」と書いています。

AHD と Dictionary.com で確かめると、こうです。
- 巧みな、見事な:a pretty maneuver(見事な作戦)
- (皮肉で)ひどい:This is a pretty mess!(こりゃまた、ひどいありさまだ!)
cunning(ずる賢い):古英語の cunnan(知っている)から。助動詞の can も同じ動詞から来ています。「知っている」→「腕がいい」→「ずる賢い」と、ほめ言葉から悪口のほうへ下りてきました。ところが AHD には「かわいらしい」の意味ものっていて、例は a cunning pet(かわいいペット)。pretty と同じゴールにたどりついた意味もあるのです。
crafty(ずるい):古英語の cræftig は「強い、腕がいい」。craft(技術、手芸)の形容詞です。今は「悪知恵が働く」がふつうの意味で、「腕がいい」は AHD で「古い用法」の扱いになっています。
shrewd(抜け目ない、鋭い):もとは動物の shrew(トガリネズミ)。古英語の scrēawa はトガリネズミのことで、中世の英語の shrewe は「ならず者、悪魔、悪いやつ」。そこから shrewed(性悪な)が生まれ、今は「頭が切れる、目のつけどころが鋭い」というほめ言葉にもなりました。
smart(頭がいい、おしゃれな):Dictionary.com によると、古英語では fyrsmeortende(火のように痛い)という長い単語の一部としてだけ出てくる、「痛む」という動詞でした。形容詞は「ひりひりする」から「すばやい、鋭い」へ。ドイツ語の schmerzen(痛む)と親せきです。今でも動詞の smart は「ずきずき痛む」で、My eyes smarted from the smoke.(煙で目がひりひりした)のように使います。
05どんでん返し:「たくらみ」の出どころは分かっていない
pretty の祖先が「たくらみ」だったことまでは、辞書の記述がそろっています。でも、その prætt がどこから来たのかは、はっきりしません。
Dictionary.com は、オランダ語の part・pret(たくらみ、いたずら)や古ノルド語(バイキングの言葉)の prettr(たくらみ)を親せきの語として挙げています。

Today, "pretty" is a nice word. We use it for flowers, faces and dresses. But about 1,000 years ago, it was not nice at all. In Old English, "prættig" meant "good at tricks" or "sly." It came from "prætt," a word for a trick.
Over many years, the meaning changed to "clever," then "fine," and later "nice to look at." The word "smart" changed too. At first, it meant "causing pain."

長い年月をかけて、意味は「巧みな」、次に「りっぱな」、そして「見た目がいい」に変わりました。「smart」という語も変わりました。最初は「痛みを起こす」という意味だったのです。

If you called someone "pretty" in England around the year 1000, you were probably not paying them a compliment. The Old English word "prættig" meant "crafty" or "cunning," and it came from "prætt," which meant a trick. Writers often used it to translate Latin words for "sly." In one Latin hymn, the words "that cunning snake" were translated with it.
During the Middle Ages, the meaning moved toward "clever," "fine" and "handsome." By about 1440, an English-Latin word list explained it with the Latin words for "elegant" and "beautiful." Some of the older senses are still around. A "pretty maneuver" is a clever one, and "a pretty mess" is a very bad situation.

Several English words for cleverness have switched sides at least once, and "pretty" is one of them. Its Old English ancestor, "prættig," meant "crafty" or "wily," and it was built on "prætt," a noun for a trick or scheme. Most of the evidence is Old English words written next to Latin ones, in manuscripts and word lists, so scholars work out the meaning from the Latin words being translated.
In Middle English the word could mean "cunning," "brave," "fine" or "handsome," and around 1440 a word list glossed it as "elegant" and "beautiful." "Cunning" went the other way. It comes from the Old English verb for "to know," the same verb that gave us "can," and it slid from "skilled" to "sly."
"Smart" began as a word for sharp pain and is related to the German verb "schmerzen," meaning "to hurt." Where "prætt" itself came from is less certain. One dictionary lists related words in Dutch and Old Norse, and an older Old English dictionary says it is "perhaps" Celtic. Even the order of the changes is pieced together from scattered dictionary entries.
