A dance from Japanese schools has become a hit on social media. Many idols are posting videos of a dance style called Soran Bushi jiyugata. Jiyugata means freestyle.

日本の学校のおどりが、SNSで大人気になっています。たくさんのアイドルが、「ソーラン節自由形」というおどりの動画を投稿しています。「自由形」は、英語で freestyle という意味です。

Soran Bushi is an old folk song from Hokkaido. Fishermen sang it when they scooped up the herring they caught. In the 1980s, a junior high school in Wakkanai made a new dance for the song. Since then, many students have danced it at school sports days.

ソーラン節は、北海道の古い民謡です。漁師たちは、とったニシンをすくい移すときにこの歌を歌いました。1980年代に、稚内の中学校が、この歌に合わせた新しいおどりを作りました。それから、たくさんの生徒が学校の運動会でこのおどりをおどってきました。

The freestyle version changes the usual Soran Bushi moves in a free and funny way. Some dancers mix in K-pop style moves. A news site said members of Nogizaka46, =LOVE and ME:I posted their own videos. The same site said members of Hinatazaka46 have joined too.

自由形は、いつものソーラン節の動きを、自由でおもしろく変えたものです。K-POP風の動きをまぜる人もいます。あるニュースサイトによると、乃木坂46、＝LOVE、ME:Iのメンバーが、自分たちの動画を投稿しました。同じサイトによると、日向坂46のメンバーも参加しました。

Each dancer can change the moves in a different way. The site also wrote about one of the Hinatazaka46 videos. In the video, one member danced the freestyle version and another danced the original moves. At the end, both of them danced freestyle.

おどる人はそれぞれ、ちがうやり方で動きを変えることができます。このサイトは、日向坂46の動画の1つも紹介しました。その動画では、メンバーの1人が自由形を、もう1人がもとのふりつけをおどりました。最後は、2人とも自由形でおどりました。

Soran Bushi began as a work song for herring fishermen on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido. The fishermen sang it while they scooped herring into boats that carried the fish to shore. Herring fishing in the area grew in the Edo period and was at its peak in the Meiji era.

ソーラン節は、北海道の日本海側でニシンをとる漁師たちの、仕事の歌として始まりました。漁師たちは、魚を岸へ運ぶ船にニシンをすくい移しながら、この歌を歌いました。この地域のニシン漁は江戸時代に盛んになり、明治時代にいちばん盛んでした。

Many Japanese teenagers know the song from school, not from the sea. In the 1980s, Wakkanai Minami Junior High School in Hokkaido created a dance called Nanchu Soran. The dance is set to a rock version of the song. It has become a regular part of school sports days in many parts of Japan.

The freestyle version plays with the old moves in a free, funny way, and some dancers mix in modern moves such as K-pop style dance. Modelpress, an entertainment news site, reported on Oct. 14 that the dance challenge had turned into a meme. It said members of Nogizaka46, =LOVE and ME:I had posted their own versions, and that members of Hinatazaka46 had joined as well.

Soran Bushi has also turned up in the world of figure skating. HuffPost Japan reported that on Oct. 10, figure skater Shoma Uno posted a video on X. In it, he and Marin Honda, his ice dance partner, are dancing Nanchu Soran in sunglasses. In May, the two announced they would return to competition together. The date on the video showed that it had been filmed about two years earlier.

ソーラン節は、フィギュアスケートの世界にも登場しました。ハフポスト日本版によると、10月10日、フィギュアスケートの宇野昌磨さんがXに動画を投稿しました。その動画では、宇野さんとアイスダンスでペアを組む本田真凜さんが、サングラス姿で南中ソーランをおどっています。2人は5月に、そろって競技にもどると発表していました。動画に出ている日付から、約2年前に撮影されたものだとわかりました。
