Freestyle Soran Bushi Turns a Fishing Song Into a Dance Meme

1An old fishing song from Hokkaido has become a dance meme on Japanese social media. Idols and other entertainers are posting short videos of a dance style known as Soran Bushi jiyugata, or freestyle Soran Bushi. The clips are spreading on TikTok and Instagram.

2Soran Bushi began as a work song for herring fishermen on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido. The fishermen sang it while they scooped herring into boats that carried the fish to shore. Herring fishing in the area grew in the Edo period and was at its peak in the Meiji era.

3Many Japanese teenagers know the song from school, not from the sea. In the 1980s, Wakkanai Minami Junior High School in Hokkaido created a dance called Nanchu Soran. The dance is set to a rock version of the song. It has become a regular part of school sports days in many parts of Japan.

4The freestyle version plays with the old moves in a free, funny way, and some dancers mix in modern moves such as K-pop style dance. Modelpress, an entertainment news site, reported on Oct. 14 that the dance challenge had turned into a meme. It said members of Nogizaka46, =LOVE and ME:I had posted their own versions, and that members of Hinatazaka46 had joined as well.

5Soran Bushi has also turned up in the world of figure skating. HuffPost Japan reported that on Oct. 10, figure skater Shoma Uno posted a video on X. In it, he and Marin Honda, his ice dance partner, are dancing Nanchu Soran in sunglasses. In May, the two announced they would return to competition together. The date on the video showed that it had been filmed about two years earlier.

1北海道の古い漁の歌が、日本のSNSでダンスのミームになっています。アイドルやほかの芸能人が、「ソーラン節自由形」と呼ばれるおどりの短い動画を投稿しています。動画はTikTokやInstagramで広がっています。

2ソーラン節は、北海道の日本海側でニシンをとる漁師たちの、仕事の歌として始まりました。漁師たちは、魚を岸へ運ぶ船にニシンをすくい移しながら、この歌を歌いました。この地域のニシン漁は江戸時代に盛んになり、明治時代にいちばん盛んでした。
