Countries around the world have decided to stop using leap seconds. The decision was made at a meeting in Versailles, France, on October 15.

A leap second is one extra second added to the world's clocks. When it is added, one minute has 61 seconds. There have been 27 leap seconds since 1972.

Leap seconds were needed because Earth does not spin at a perfectly steady speed. The world's clocks follow atomic clocks, which are very exact. So clock time and the time based on Earth's spin slowly move apart.

However, leap seconds can cause problems for computers. Phones, planes and satellites all depend on exact time. Leap seconds will end on May 20, 2027. After that, the gap between the two times can grow to as much as one hour. Scientists expect the gap to stay under one hour for over 1,000 years, Scientific American said.
