折りたたみiPhone「iPhone Duo」とは？本のように開く初のiPhone

Apple's first folding iPhone goes on sale in Japan and many other countries on October 23. Orders open at 9 p.m. on October 16, Japan time.

アップル初の折りたたみiPhoneが、10月23日に日本など多くの国で発売されます。予約は、日本時間の10月16日午後9時に始まります。

The new phone is called the iPhone Duo. It opens and closes like a book. When it is open, the screen measures 7.6 inches from corner to corner. When it is closed, people can use a smaller 5.4-inch screen on the outside.

この新しいスマホは、iPhone Duo（デュオ）という名前です。本のように開いたり閉じたりします。開くと、画面の大きさは、角から角までで7.6インチになります。閉じたときは、外側にある5.4インチの小さめの画面が使えます。

Folding phones are not new. Samsung and Huawei have sold them since 2019. But one expert says they make up only about 2 percent of smartphone sales around the world.

The iPhone Duo is also very expensive. In Japan, the price starts at 364,800 yen. In the United States, it starts at 1,999 dollars. Apple said the phone will reach 28 more countries and regions on October 30.

The iPhone Duo folds open and shut like a book. Unfolded, it has a 7.6-inch screen, which Apple says gives users 50 percent more screen than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. When it is folded, users can turn to a 5.4-inch screen on the outside. Apple says the outer screen is about 90 percent as big as the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple said the hinge that lets the phone bend contains more than 100 parts.

Apple is late to this market. Samsung and Huawei have sold folding phones since 2019, and early models had serious problems with durability. Even now, only about one in 50 smartphones sold around the world is a folding phone, according to Jason Snell, who writes about Apple for the website Six Colors. He said the category is solid but not huge.

Price is another hurdle. The iPhone Duo starts at 1,999 dollars in the United States. Based on Apple's prices, it costs 800 dollars more than the cheapest iPhone 18 Pro. In Japan, the model with the smallest storage costs 364,800 yen, while the 2-terabyte model costs 574,800 yen.

値段も、もう1つの壁です。iPhone Duo は、アメリカでは1,999ドルからです。アップルの値段をくらべると、いちばん安い iPhone 18 Pro より800ドル高いことになります。日本では、保存できる量がいちばん少ないモデルが36万4,800円、2テラバイトのモデルは57万4,800円です。

Apple said the phone can play video for up to 44 hours on the outer screen and up to 31 hours on the inner one. On October 30, sales will expand to 28 more countries and regions.

アップルによると、このスマホで動画を再生できるのは、外側の画面で最大44時間、内側の画面で最大31時間です。10月30日には、さらに28の国と地域に販売が広がります。
