Rimsky-Korsakov was born in 1844 into a noble family in Tikhvin, a town in northwestern Russia. He began piano lessons at around six and had an excellent ear, and he is said to have tried composing as a young child. But what really captured the boy's imagination was life at sea, like that of his older brother Voin, a naval officer. At twelve he entered the Naval Cadet Corps in Saint Petersburg.
While at the naval school he met the composer Mily Balakirev and joined the circle that became known as the Mighty Handful. From 1862 he spent nearly three years on a long overseas voyage aboard the clipper Almaz, visiting places such as Britain, the United States and Brazil. He kept working on his First Symphony during the voyage. Back home, he went on composing while still in the navy, and in 1871 he was invited to become a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.
In truth, when he became a professor he had never properly studied harmony or music theory. In his memoirs he admitted that he had to study hard himself while teaching his students. In 1872 he married the pianist Nadezhda Purgold. From 1873 to 1884 he was also inspector of the navy's bands. Then, in 1887 and 1888, he produced Capriccio espagnol, Scheherazade and the Russian Easter Festival Overture one after another.
His pupils included Stravinsky and Glazunov, and Prokofiev also attended his orchestration class. During the 1905 revolution he sided with his students and was dismissed from the conservatory for a time, though he was later reinstated. He died at his country estate in Lyubensk in June 1908, aged 64. His last opera, The Golden Cockerel, was held back by the censors and was not staged until 1909. He also did great service by completing and revising the works of his friends Mussorgsky and Borodin.
Rimsky-Korsakov was born in Russia in 1844. He joined the navy as a boy. He made a long voyage on a navy ship. Later, he became a music teacher. He wrote Flight of the Bumblebee. It is very, very fast music!

Rimsky-Korsakov is said to have linked each musical key, such as C major or D major, with a particular color. This kind of crossing of the senses is called synesthesia. There is also a story that he compared his key colors with those of the composer Alexander Scriabin, who was said to have similar experiences.
The super-fast Flight of the Bumblebee comes from his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan. It is heard when Prince Gvidon, turned into a bumblebee by a magic swan, flies across the sea to visit his father. It became famous on its own and is now played on all kinds of instruments.
Scheherazade is based on The Thousand and One Nights. A gentle solo violin represents Scheherazade, the vizier's daughter who saved her life by telling the sultan a new story every night. The composer gave each movement a title at first, but later removed them so as not to limit the listener's imagination.
In 1863, the clipper Almaz, carrying the young officer Rimsky-Korsakov, visited the United States as part of a Russian fleet, right in the middle of the American Civil War. The ship went on to places such as Brazil. The seas and foreign sights of this nearly three-year voyage are said to have colored his later music.
He wrote a textbook on orchestration called Principles of Orchestration. Every musical example in it is taken from his own works, so he could explain orchestration through scores he knew in every detail. After his death, it was completed by his pupil and son-in-law Maximilian Steinberg and published in 1913.
From 1871, for about a year, Rimsky-Korsakov shared a room with his friend Mussorgsky. They had only one piano, so they reportedly agreed on a schedule and took turns. When Rimsky-Korsakov married in 1872, this cheerful arrangement came to an end.
