Song of India is an aria sung by a merchant from India in Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Sadko. Its proper name is Song of the Indian Guest. It has a sweet, mysterious melody that seems to twist and sway. The song became popular outside the opera and spread around the world in many forms, including violin arrangements and jazz versions.
Sadko is an opera based on old Russian heroic tales called byliny, and it was composed from 1894 to 1896. The hero, Sadko, is a young gusli player in the town of Novgorod. The gusli is a Russian string instrument. Before setting sail, Sadko asks three foreign merchants at the harbor to sing about their homelands. The Indian merchant sings of the wonders of a faraway land, such as countless diamonds in caves and pearls in a warm sea.
The opera was first performed in Moscow in January 1898 (by today's calendar) by a privately run opera company. Later, this song became popular on its own. The violinist Fritz Kreisler arranged it, and in 1937 Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra had a big hit with a swing jazz version called Song of India. A song from an opera became a dance hall favorite!
This song is from a Russian opera. A man from India sings it. He sings about his faraway land. The melody is sweet and mysterious. Later, it became a big jazz hit in America!

In 1937, Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra in America recorded a swing jazz version of this song. Bunny Berigan's trumpet solo became famous, and the record was a big hit. A song from a Russian opera got people dancing in American dance halls.
Three foreign merchants sing in front of Sadko. The Viking merchant from the north sings a powerful song, the Indian merchant sings a sweet and strange one, and the Venetian merchant sings a bright Italian-style song. Painting three lands in music this way shows off the skill of the 'wizard of the orchestra'.
In the opera, Sadko is helped by Volkhova, daughter of the Sea King, whom he meets by a lake. With golden fish, he becomes rich and sets out on a long voyage. Later, when he plays his gusli in the kingdom under the sea, the dancing causes a terrible storm. It is a fantasy tale full of Russian folklore.
Fritz Kreisler, a hugely popular violinist in the early 1900s, arranged this song for violin and piano. The melody, written for the human voice, suited the sweet sound of the violin perfectly. It is still sometimes played, for example as an encore at concerts.
