Capriccio espagnol is an orchestral work composed in 1887 by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Its five sections, based on Spanish folk songs and dance tunes, are played without a break. Castanets, tambourine, harp and dazzling solos for the violin and other instruments appear one after another, packing in all the heat of a Spanish festival.
At first, Rimsky-Korsakov planned a piece for violin and orchestra using Spanish melodies, but he changed it into a work for orchestra alone. The five sections are Alborada (a morning song), Variations, Alborada again, Scene and Gypsy Song, and Fandango of Asturias. The fourth section opens with cadenzas, showy solo moments in which different instruments take turns.
The premiere took place in the autumn of 1887 in St. Petersburg, with the composer conducting, and it was a great success. According to his autobiography, the players applauded from the very first rehearsal, and the delighted composer dedicated the piece to the members of the orchestra. When people praised it for its brilliant orchestration, he wrote that it was really 'a brilliant composition for the orchestra'.
This music is by a Russian composer. But it is about Spain! You can hear castanets and a tambourine. Many instruments play exciting solos. The players liked it so much that they clapped during the first rehearsal.

According to Rimsky-Korsakov's autobiography, as soon as the first movement ended at the first rehearsal, the whole orchestra burst into applause, and they clapped again at every pause after that. Players usually don't applaud the music they are playing! To thank them, the composer dedicated the piece to the orchestra's members.
This piece is dedicated to the 67 members of the Imperial Opera orchestra in St. Petersburg, who gave the first performance. It is very unusual for a composer to dedicate a work to each player of an orchestra, instead of a king, a noble or a friend. Composer and players truly became one through this music.
At first, Rimsky-Korsakov planned a piece for violin and orchestra using Spanish melodies. As if left over from that plan, solo violin parts still stand out in the finished work. It gives the concertmaster, the leader of the violins, many chances to shine.
The year after Capriccio espagnol, in 1888, Rimsky-Korsakov finished the symphonic suite Scheherazade and the Russian Easter Festival Overture. All of them make full use of the orchestra's colors. These three works come from the time when the skill of this 'wizard of the orchestra' shone especially bright.
