The Story

Rimsky-Korsakov completed this overture for orchestra in 1888. It describes the Easter celebrations of the Russian Orthodox Church. Easter, which celebrates the rising of Christ from the dead, is one of the most important Christian festivals, and in Russia it has long been celebrated with ringing church bells.

The piece uses old chants from the Russian Orthodox Church. It begins in a calm, solemn mood. A trombone sings like a praying voice, and then bells and dance-like rhythms join in until the music becomes a joyful festival. In his memoirs, the composer wrote that he wanted to show both the ancient folk merrymaking and the church side of the holiday.

The overture was first performed in St. Petersburg in December 1888, and it was dedicated to the memory of his late friends Mussorgsky and Borodin. Together with Capriccio Espagnol and Scheherazade, written around the same time, it is still often played as one of Rimsky-Korsakov's great orchestral works.

This music is about Easter in Russia. Easter is a big spring festival for Christians. You can hear old church songs and many bells. The music starts slowly and quietly. Then it becomes a happy party.

The piece is dedicated to the memory of Mussorgsky and Borodin. Both belonged to 'The Five,' the same group of Russian composers as Rimsky-Korsakov. Borodin died in 1887, around the time this music was being written.

In the middle of the piece, a trombone sings alone, almost like speaking. It is said to represent a priest chanting in church. The trombone, usually known for its power, becomes a voice of prayer here.

At the start of the score, the composer printed words he chose from the Bible: lines from the Psalms and a passage from the New Testament about Christ rising again. He wanted listeners to think of the Easter story before the music begins.

Russian churches have a tradition of ringing many bells together in lively rhythms. Near the end of this piece, the instruments of the orchestra work together to imitate those bells. Listen closely and you can hear the bells overlapping.
