Procession of the Nobles is a piece from Act 2 of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera-ballet Mlada. An opera-ballet is a stage work full of both singing and dancing. It opens with a brilliant fanfare from trumpets, trombones and other brass instruments, and paints a picture of nobles marching proudly. Today it is often played at orchestra concerts and by brass bands.
Mlada has a long history. In 1872, under a plan by the director of the Imperial Theatres, Cui, Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov were to share the work of writing Mlada, but the plan fell through. More than fifteen years later, Rimsky-Korsakov wrote a new Mlada all by himself. It is said that his excitement at seeing Wagner's Ring cycle in 1889 also shaped the rich sound of this work.
Mlada was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, but the complete stage work is rarely performed today. Procession of the Nobles, however, became a popular piece on its own because of its brilliant sound. It is loved as a bright, festive march that suits celebrations.
This is a march from a Russian stage work. The trumpets play a big fanfare. Then the nobles march in. The music sounds bright and proud. Brass bands love to play it!

In 1872, the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres asked several composers to write Mlada together. Cui, Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov were to share the acts, and Ludwig Minkus was to write the ballet music. But the plan was dropped, partly because of the cost. The unfinished music was later used in other works by each composer.
In 1889, Wagner's four-part Ring cycle was performed in St. Petersburg, and it greatly inspired Rimsky-Korsakov. In his new Mlada, he used the orchestra on a bigger, richer scale. Some say you can feel that influence in the shining brass of Procession of the Nobles.
Mlada is set in Retra, a Slavic town said to have stood near the Baltic Sea, around the 9th or 10th century. The spirit of Princess Mlada, who has died, appears along with witches and gods in this strange and grand story. Partly because it needs a huge stage production, the complete work is rarely performed.
Procession of the Nobles has also been arranged for concert bands and brass bands, and it is often played by school and community bands. Since the brass instruments are the stars, it is a fun piece for trumpet and trombone players to play out loud.
