It is night. A big turtle comes out of the sea. She walks on the beach. Slowly, slowly.
夜です。大きなウミガメが一ぴき、海から上がってきました。砂浜を歩いていきます。のっそり、のっそり。
She makes a hole in the sand. She lays her eggs in it. One, two, three, many eggs! About one hundred! Then she goes back to the sea.
お母さんガメは、砂に穴を掘りました。そして、その中に卵を産みました。1つ、2つ、3つ、たくさんの卵です！ およそ100個もあります！ それがすむと、お母さんは海へ帰っていきました。
The eggs stay in the sand. Here is a strange thing. Warm sand makes many girls. Cool sand makes many boys!
卵は砂の中にとどまります。ここで、ふしぎなことが起こります。温かい砂の中では、女の子がたくさん生まれます。ひんやりした砂の中では、男の子がたくさん生まれるのです！
About two months later, the eggs hatch. The babies come out. They are very small. They come up at night.
2か月ほどたつと、卵がかえりました。赤ちゃんたちが出てきたのです。とても小さな赤ちゃんです。赤ちゃんたちは、夜になってから砂の上に出てきました。
Then they all crawl to the sea. Go, babies, go! The sea is big. But they can swim!
そして、みんなで海へ向かって、よちよちはっていきました。それ行け、赤ちゃんたち！ 海はとても大きいけれど、赤ちゃんたちはちゃんと泳げるのです！
Many years later, a girl turtle comes back. She comes back to the same place. It is her birthday place! Now she lays her eggs there, too.
何年もたって、一匹のメスのウミガメが帰ってきました。やってきたのは、あの同じあたりです。自分が生まれた場所なのです！ 今度は自分も、そこに卵を産むのです。
