There was once a king of Argos named Acrisius, who had a beautiful daughter called Danae. The king had no sons, so he went to ask the oracle at Delphi whether he would ever have one. The answer frightened him. "You will have no son," said the oracle, "but your daughter will have a son, and that grandson will one day cause your death."
Acrisius did not want to harm his own daughter, but he was terribly afraid of the prophecy. So he shut Danae away in a room made of bronze, deep under the ground, where no man could ever reach her. But nothing can be hidden from the gods. Zeus, the king of the gods, saw Danae through a small window in the roof and fell in love with her. He came to her as a shower of golden rain, and some time later, Danae gave birth to a baby boy. She named him Perseus.
When Acrisius heard the baby crying, he was filled with fear. He did not dare to kill his own daughter and grandson with his hands, because he feared the anger of the gods. Instead, he put them both into a large wooden chest and threw it into the sea. "Let the waves decide," he said.
The chest floated for days across the dark water while Danae held her baby close and sang to him. At last it washed up on the shore of a small island called Seriphos. There a kind fisherman named Dictys found them and pulled the chest from his net. He took Danae and her son into his simple home, and for many years they lived there happily. Perseus grew up tall, strong, and brave.
Unfortunately, the island was ruled by Dictys's brother, King Polydectes, who was nothing like the gentle fisherman. Polydectes wanted to marry Danae, but she did not love him and always refused. Perseus, now a young man, stood between the king and his mother, and Polydectes could not get rid of him easily. So the king made a clever plan.
He held a great banquet and told everyone that he was going to marry a princess from another land. Every guest was expected to bring a fine wedding gift, such as a horse. Perseus was poor and had nothing to give. When the others laughed at him, his pride was hurt, and he said something foolish. "I have no horse," he said, "but I will bring you any gift you name. I would even bring you the head of Medusa."
The king smiled. This was exactly what he had hoped for. "Then bring me the head of Medusa," he said. "And until you return, your mother will stay here in my palace."
Medusa was one of the three Gorgons, terrible sisters who lived at the far edge of the world. Instead of hair, living snakes grew from Medusa's head, and her face was so dreadful that anyone who looked at it was turned to stone at once. Many brave men had gone to find her, and none had come back. Perseus realized too late what he had promised. But he could not take back his word, and he could not leave his mother in the hands of Polydectes.
Fortunately, the gods were watching over the son of Zeus. One night, as Perseus sat alone on the beach, two figures appeared in front of him. One was a tall woman with gray eyes and a helmet: Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The other was a young man with wings on his hat: Hermes, the messenger of the gods.
"We will help you," said Athena. She gave him a shield of bronze, polished so brightly that it shone like a mirror. "Never look at Medusa directly," she said. "Look only at her reflection in this shield." Hermes gave him a curved sword, sharp enough to cut through the hardest metal. "But you will need more than this," Hermes said. "The nymphs of the north keep three treasures that you must have. Only the Gray Sisters know where to find them."
So Perseus traveled to the cold, misty land where the Gray Sisters lived. They were three ancient women, as old as the world itself, and between the three of them they had only one eye and one tooth, which they passed from hand to hand. Perseus hid among the rocks and waited. When one sister took the eye out to pass it to the next, he jumped out and caught it.
"Who is there?" the sisters screamed, turning their blind faces from side to side. "Give back our eye!"
"I will," said Perseus, "as soon as you tell me how to find the nymphs of the north." The sisters had no choice, and they told him the way. Perseus kept his promise and placed the eye gently back into an old, shaking hand.
The nymphs of the north welcomed him kindly, and they gave him three gifts. The first was a pair of winged sandals that would carry him through the air like a bird. The second was a magic helmet that made anyone who wore it invisible. The third was a strong leather bag in which he could safely carry the Gorgon's head.
With the sandals on his feet, Perseus flew over mountains, deserts, and seas until he reached the island of the Gorgons. Everywhere on the rocky shore stood gray stone figures. There were stone birds, stone goats, and stone men with frightened faces, all of them creatures who had looked into Medusa's eyes. Perseus shivered, put on his helmet, and became invisible.
He found the three Gorgons asleep in front of their cave. Their bodies were covered in hard scales, and they had golden wings folded on their backs. The snakes on their heads moved slowly even while they slept. Two of the sisters could never die, but Medusa could. Turning his back to her, Perseus raised his shield and watched her reflection carefully. Athena herself guided his hand. With one swift stroke of his sword, he cut off the Gorgon's head, and without once looking at it, he put it into the leather bag.
At that moment, something amazing happened. From the place where Medusa had fallen, a beautiful white horse with great wings sprang up into the air. This was Pegasus, and he flew away into the sky. The other two Gorgons woke with terrible cries and looked around for the killer of their sister. But they could not see him, because he wore the helmet. Perseus rose into the air and flew away as fast as the winged sandals could carry him.
On his way home, as he flew over the coast of Ethiopia, Perseus saw something strange below him. A young woman was chained to a rock by the sea, and the waves were washing over her feet. He flew down and asked who she was. Through her tears, she told him that her name was Andromeda and that she was the daughter of the king and queen of that land. Her mother had foolishly boasted that she was more beautiful than the sea nymphs. To punish this pride, the god of the sea had sent a monster to attack the country, and an oracle had said that only the princess could satisfy it.
Just then, the water began to boil, and a huge sea monster rose up from the waves, its mouth wide open. Perseus flew high into the air and dived down on the monster again and again, striking it with his sword, until at last it sank under the waves forever. He broke Andromeda's chains and carried her to her parents. The king and queen were overjoyed, and soon Perseus and Andromeda were married.
When Perseus finally returned to Seriphos with his new wife, he found that things were worse than he had feared. His mother had run away from Polydectes and was hiding in a temple with the kind fisherman Dictys. Perseus went straight to the palace, where the king was holding another banquet with his friends.
Polydectes laughed when he saw him. "So the boy has come back," he said. "And where is my gift? I suppose you have brought me nothing."
"I have brought you exactly what I promised," said Perseus calmly. He turned his own eyes away and lifted the head of Medusa out of the bag. The laughing stopped. In a single moment, the king and all his cruel friends became gray stone statues, frozen forever around their table.
Perseus made the good fisherman Dictys king of the island. He gave the magic gifts back to the gods, and he gave Medusa's head to Athena, who set it on her shield. Then he traveled with his mother and his wife back toward Argos.
But the prophecy had not been forgotten. Some time later, Perseus took part in an athletic contest in a city called Larissa. When it was his turn to throw the discus, a sudden wind carried it into the crowd, where it struck an old man watching the games. The old man fell and never rose again. He was King Acrisius, who had come to the games in secret. All his efforts to escape fate had led him to that place. The words of the oracle had come true after all, just as the gods had said they would.
