Emily came to Japan from Canada to stay with the Mori family for one month. Before her trip, her mother said, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Watch the people, and do what they do."
エミリーは、森さんの家に一か月ホームステイするために、カナダから日本へやって来ました。出発の前に、お母さんがこう言いました。「ローマではローマ人のようにしなさい。まわりの人をよく見て、同じようにするのよ」
At the Mori house, Emily took off her shoes at the door. Good! She said "itadakimasu" before dinner. Very good! She ate with chopsticks. Not bad at all!
森さんの家で、エミリーは玄関でくつをぬぎました。いいですね！ 晩ごはんの前には「いただきます」と言いました。とてもいいですね！ おはしで食べました。なかなか上手です！
On the third day, she went to the toilet. There was a pair of special slippers inside, so she put them on. Then she walked back to the living room, still in the toilet slippers.
三日目、エミリーはトイレに行きました。中に特別なスリッパがあったので、それをはきました。そして、トイレのスリッパをはいたまま、リビングに戻ってきました。
The Mori family looked at her feet. Little Haru began to laugh. Mrs. Mori smiled kindly. "Emily, those slippers stay in the toilet room," she said.
森さんの家族は、エミリーの足もとを見ました。小さなハルが笑いだしました。森さんの奥さんは、やさしくほほえみました。「エミリー、そのスリッパはトイレの中だけではくのよ」と、奥さんは言いました。
Emily's face turned red. Then she laughed, too. "There are so many slippers in Japan! Slippers for the house, slippers for the toilet... Do you have slippers for the slippers?"
エミリーは顔が赤くなりました。それから、エミリーも笑いました。「日本にはスリッパがいっぱいあるのね！ 家の中用のスリッパ、トイレ用のスリッパ……スリッパ用のスリッパもあるの？」
After that, Emily watched everyone carefully. By the end of the month, she was an expert. She even taught Haru's friends about the toilet slippers.
それからエミリーは、みんなのすることをよく見るようにしました。一か月がたつころには、すっかり名人になっていました。ハルの友だちに、トイレのスリッパのことを教えてあげたほどでした。
The next summer, Haru visited Emily in Canada. At dinner, he picked up his bowl of soup and drank from it. Emily's brother stared at him. "Haru," Emily said with a smile, "when in Canada, do as the Canadians do." Then she handed him a spoon.
次の夏、ハルがカナダのエミリーの家をたずねました。晩ごはんのとき、ハルはスープのおわんを持ち上げて、そのまま飲みました。エミリーの弟は、目を丸くしてハルを見つめました。「ハル」と、エミリーはにっこりして言いました。「カナダでは、カナダ人のようにね」そして、ハルにスプーンを渡しました。
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do." When you visit a new place, follow the ways of the people there.
「ローマではローマ人のようにせよ」。新しい場所をたずねたら、そこの人たちのやり方に合わせなさい、という意味です。
