In English class, Mr. Brown said, "Time flies when you're having fun." Then he wrote it on the board. Tom read it again and again. He did not understand it.
After school, Tom ran home. He took the clock off the kitchen wall. Then he went upstairs and opened his bedroom window.
His mother came into the room. "Tom! What are you doing with my clock?"
"I'm doing a science test, Mom," said Tom. "My teacher says time flies. I want to see it fly!"
His mother quickly took the clock back. "Tom, that's not what it means," she said. "'Time flies' means time goes very fast. When you are having fun, an hour feels like five minutes."
Tom thought about it. "Oh. So time flies when I play video games?"
"Yes," said his mother. "And it walks very, very slowly when you do your homework."
Tom sat down at his desk with a sigh. His mother was right. The homework took forever.
"Time flies" is an idiom. It does not mean that a clock can fly like a bird. It means that time seems to pass very quickly.
「Time flies」
