It is a cold, rainy night. Mr. and Mrs. Rabbit are at home. They are warm and happy.
寒い雨の夜でした。ウサギさん夫婦は家の中で、あたたかく、しあわせにすごしていました。
Knock, knock! Someone is at the door.
トントン！ だれかがドアをたたいていました。
"Who's there?" asks Mr. Rabbit.
「どなた？」とウサギのだんなさんがききました。
"Lettuce," says a little voice.
「レタスです」と小さな声が答えました。
"Lettuce who?" asks Mrs. Rabbit.
「どちらのレタスさん？」とウサギの奥さんがききました。
"Lettuce in, please! It is cold out here!"
「中に入れてください！ 外は寒いんです！」
Mr. Rabbit opens the door. There are three little lettuces. They are wet and cold.
ウサギのだんなさんがドアを開けると、小さなレタスが3つ立っていました。ぬれて、こごえています。
"Come in, come in!" says Mrs. Rabbit. "Sit by the fire. Don't worry. We just had dinner." The three lettuces look at each other. "You just had dinner?" says the smallest one. "Oh, good!"
「さあ入って、入って！」とウサギのおくさんが言いました。「火のそばにおすわりなさい。心配しないで。晩ごはんはさっき食べたところだから」3つのレタスは顔を見合わせました。「晩ごはん、もう食べたんですか？」といちばん小さいレタスが言いました。「ああ、よかった！」
"Lettuce" sounds like "let us." So "Lettuce in" means "Let us in."
lettuce（レタス）は let us と同じような音です。だから Lettuce in は Let us in（わたしたちを中に入れて）という意味になるのです。
