Should space exploration be carried out mainly by robots rather than humans?

Robots are valuable partners, but I do not think space exploration should be left mainly to them. The first reason is that humans can adapt to unexpected situations far better than machines. On Mars, signals from Earth take several minutes or more to arrive, so rovers must move slowly and carefully. A trained astronaut, on the other hand, can notice an unusual rock, change plans immediately and repair broken equipment on the spot. During the Apollo missions, astronauts collected hundreds of kilograms of carefully selected Moon rocks, which scientists are still studying today. The second reason is that human missions drive the development of new technology. To keep people alive in space, engineers must improve life-support systems, radiation protection and medicine, and these advances often benefit people on Earth as well. For these reasons, I believe the best approach is for robots to prepare the way and for humans to follow.

I do not think robots should do most of the work in space. First, people can think quickly and solve problems. Robots on Mars must wait for orders from Earth, so they move slowly. An astronaut can look at a strange rock and decide what to do right away. Second, sending people to space helps us make new technology, such as better medicine. Robots and people should work together to explore space.

  • Robots do not need food, water or air, so they can explore much more cheaply and keep working for many years.
  • Sending robots means that no human lives are put at risk in dangerous places such as the surface of Mars.

be left to ~
adapt to ~
unexpected situation
on the spot
その場で
life-support system
prepare the way
