PALE BLUE DOT

THE STORY

Voyager 1 was leaving the solar system. Carl Sagan said, "Let's look back and take a family photo of the planets." On February 14, 1990, Voyager 1 took 60 pictures. They were its last pictures.Voyager 1 had finished visiting Jupiter and Saturn and was heading out of the solar system. Astronomer Carl Sagan, a member of the Voyager imaging team, suggested turning the camera back to take a 'family portrait' of the planets. NASA agreed, and on February 14, 1990, Voyager 1 took 60 pictures, including this one of Earth. The streaks of light are sunlight scattered inside the camera, because the Sun was close to Earth in the view. Soon after, the cameras were turned off to save power, so these were Voyager 1's last pictures.

FEEL THE DISTANCE

If Earth were a 1 mm grain of sand, Voyager 1 is now about 2 km away!If Earth were a grain of sand 1 mm wide, Voyager 1 took this picture from about 470 meters away. Today it is about two kilometers away, and still moving outward at about 17 kilometers per second.
