Astronauts sleep in sleeping bags on the wall. There is no up or down in space. They sleep about 8 hours.Astronauts sleep in sleeping bags attached to the wall of small, phone-booth-sized crew cabins. With no up or down, they can sleep standing up or upside down. About eight hours of sleep are scheduled each day.

There is no shower. They use wet towels. Water floats like a ball! There is no shower on the space station. Astronauts wipe down with wet towels and use rinse-free shampoo. Water floats away in wobbly balls, so they must be careful. Toothpaste is swallowed or spat into a towel.

Astronauts do science experiments. Japan has a lab on the station called Kibo.Science is the main job: research on medicines, new materials, plants and the human body that can only be done in near-weightlessness. Many experiments take place in Japan's Kibo laboratory module. More than 3,000 experiments have been carried out on the station.

They eat tortillas, not bread. Crumbs can float into machines! Salt and pepper are liquid.Astronauts eat tortillas instead of bread, because floating crumbs could get into equipment. Salt is dissolved in water and pepper is mixed in oil. Japan's space foods include ramen, curry and sweet bean jelly. Food packs are held down with hook-and-loop tape.

In space, bones and muscles get weak. So astronauts exercise about 2 hours every day.Without gravity, bones and muscles weaken quickly if they aren't used, so astronauts exercise about two hours every day: running on a treadmill while held down by bungee cords, riding an exercise bike, and lifting with a machine that uses vacuum cylinders instead of weights.

Some days, astronauts go outside in spacesuits to fix things. It can take 6 or 7 hours. On some days, astronauts suit up and go outside to repair or install equipment. A spacewalk can last six or seven hours, with hours of preparation. They stay tethered to the station.

Haircuts use a clipper with a vacuum. The hair cannot float away!Space haircuts use electric clippers attached to a vacuum hose that sucks up the hair before it can float away. On weekends the crew also cleans the station together.

The toilet uses air to pull things away. Pee and sweat become clean drinking water again!Space toilets use airflow to pull waste away. Urine, sweat and moisture from the air are recycled into clean drinking water — in 2023 NASA announced the station can now recover about 98% of its water.
