「〜より」の than のあとに代名詞を1つだけ置くなら me がふつう。Cambridge の文法解説は than I で文を終える形を「こうは言わない」とし、改まった文なら than I am と be 動詞まで言う形を示す。
ひとことで言うと「私より背が高い」は英語で taller than me がふつうだった!
もくじ
He is taller than I.(彼は私より背が高い)
比較の文を習うとき、「than のあとは主語の形の I。うしろに am が省略されているから」と教わった人もいるでしょう。
ところが、イギリスの Cambridge University Press の文法解説を開くと、例文はこうなっています。Could you carry this? You're stronger than me.(これ運んでくれる? あなたのほうが力持ちだし)。そしてその下に、はっきり「Not: You're stronger than I.」。学校で正解とされやすい than I に、Cambridge は「こうは言わない」と書いているのです。
01「than I」は、1700年代から文法家が言ってきたルール
なぜ学校では than I になるのでしょう。アメリカの大型辞書『American Heritage Dictionary』(AHD)の than の解説に、その理由が書いてあります。
1700年代から、文法家たちは than をいつも接続詞(文と文をつなぐ語)として扱うべきだと主張してきました。 この考え方では、Bill is taller than Tom. は Bill is taller than Tom is. の is が省略された文です。そうなると than のあとの代名詞は、省略された動詞の主語なので、主語の形にしなければいけない。だから Pat is taller than I.(I am の am が省略されている)が正しく、than me はだめ、というわけです。
このルールは、同じ理屈で次の文の me を認めます。
- The news surprised Pat more than me.(その知らせは、私よりパットを驚かせた)
- → The news surprised Pat more than it surprised me. の省略なので、me は目的語。だから me でよい
筋は通っています。でも AHD は、この分析を「いくぶん無理がある」と評価しています。
02辞書の答え:than のあとは me でいい
では、辞書は今の英語をどう説明しているでしょうか。
Cambridge が改まった場面の形として示しているのは、than I ではなく than I am です。than I で止めると不自然に聞こえることがあり、be 動詞まで言えば改まった言い方として使える。学校で習う「am が省略されている」という説明も、am を省略せずに書けば、そのまま改まった言い方として通ります。
03「It is I」も同じ道をたどった
同じことは、ドアの外から「私だよ」と言うときにも起こります。
Cambridge の代名詞の解説では、ふつうの言い方は It's me.。そして「It is I. はあまり使われない。とても改まった言い方」と注記しています。「だれがお菓子を全部食べたの?」と聞かれたときの短い答えも、くだけた会話なら Me.、改まるなら I did. です。
AHD も be の解説で、伝統的な文法は It is I(me ではなく)を求めてきたが、ごく改まった文体以外では It's me と言い、It's I とは言わない、と書いています。I の解説では、くだけた場面でこのルールを守ると大げさに、ばかばかしくさえ聞こえることがあるとして、「It's we なんて言う人がいるだろうか」と問いかけています。

04どんでん返し:いつでも me でいいわけではない
「じゃあ、いつでも me でいいの?」というと、そう単純でもありません。
1つ目は、意味が変わる文です。たとえば She loves the dog more than me. は、「彼女は私より犬のほうを愛している」と読めます。もし「私が犬を愛している以上に、彼女は犬を愛している」と言いたいなら、She loves the dog more than I do. と動詞まで言う必要があります。Oxford の学習辞典にも He loves me more than you do.(あなたが私を愛している以上に、彼は私を愛している)という例文があります。AHD も、比較の文で意味があいまいになるときは、動詞を足すよう勧めています。
2つ目は、改まった文章での受け止め方です。AHD は I の解説で、It is me のような形は長いあいだ教室や作文の手引きで責められてきたので、改まった書き言葉で完全に受け入れられる見込みは小さい、とも書いています。than me についても、Cambridge は改まった場面では than I am の形を示しています。
3つ目は、ルールの使いすぎとされる言い方です。between you and me(ここだけの話)を between you and I と言う人がいます。AHD によると、これを、It is I が正しいと教わった人が、ここでも I が正しいと思いこんだ結果(正しく言おうとしすぎて起こる「過剰修正」)とみる人たちがいます。ただ AHD は、それだけでは説明しきれないとも書いています。この言い方はシェイクスピアにもあり、禁じるルールが書かれる300年ほど前から使われていたからです。それでも、改まった場面では避けるのが無難だとしています。
05まとめ
「He is taller than I.」は、1700年代から文法家たちが than を接続詞とみなしてきたことによるルールでした。今の辞書は、than のあとに代名詞を1つ置くなら me がふつうで、than I で止めると不自然・気取って聞こえることがある、と説明しています。
改まった文では than I am と be 動詞まで書く。意味が変わりそうなら than I do と動詞を足す。この2つを押さえておけば、than のあとの I と me で迷わなくなります。
よくある質問
than me と than I はどちらが正しいですか?
代名詞を1つだけ置くなら than me がふつうです。Cambridge の文法解説は You're stronger than me. を例に挙げ、than I で終える形には「Not(こうは言わない)」と書いています。改まった文なら than I am と言います。
学校で than I と習ったのはなぜですか?
1700年代から文法家たちが、than を接続詞として扱うべきだと主張してきたからです。taller than I は than I am の am を省いた形なので I にする、という考え方です。アメリカン・ヘリテージ英語辞典(AHD)は、この分析を「いくぶん無理がある」としています。
than I と言うと間違いですか?
アメリカン・ヘリテージ英語辞典(AHD)は誤りとまでは言っていませんが、than I で止めると不自然に、さらには気取って聞こえることがあると書いています。Cambridge は than I に「Not」とはっきり書いていて、辞書によって強さに差があります。
英作文の試験ではどう書けばいいですか?
My sister is taller than I am. のように be 動詞まで書くと安心です。Cambridge が改まった場面の形として挙げている書き方で、学校で習う「am が省略されている」という説明とも合います。
than me と than I do で意味が変わることはありますか?
あります。She loves the dog more than me. は「彼女は私より犬のほうを愛している」と読めます。「私が犬を愛している以上に彼女は犬を愛している」と言いたいなら、She loves the dog more than I do. と動詞まで言います。
It's me と It is I はどちらが正しいですか?
ふつうは It's me. です。Cambridge は It is I. を「あまり使われない。とても改まった言い方」としています。アメリカン・ヘリテージ英語辞典も、ごく改まった文体以外では It's me と言い、It's I とは言わないと書いています。
between you and I は正しい英語ですか?
改まった場面では避けるのが無難です。ふつうは between you and me(ここだけの話)と言います。アメリカン・ヘリテージ英語辞典によると、between you and I はシェイクスピアにもある古い言い方ですが、正しく言おうとしすぎた過剰修正とみる人たちもいます。

Many students learn this rule. After "than," use "I," as in "He is taller than I." But the Cambridge grammar guide gives a different example. It says "You're stronger than me."
Then it says that people do not say "You're stronger than I." In everyday English, "me" is the normal word here. If you want to sound more formal, you can say "than I am." With "am" at the end, "I" sounds natural.

多くの生徒がこんなルールを習います。「than」のあとは「I」を使う、「He is taller than I.(彼は私より背が高い)」のように。でも Cambridge の文法解説は、ちがう例を挙げています。「You're stronger than me.(あなたは私より強い)」です。
そして「You're stronger than I.」とは言わない、と書いています。ふだんの英語では、ここは「me」がふつうの語です。もっと改まった感じにしたいなら、「than I am」と言えます。最後に「am」があれば、「I」は自然に聞こえます。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
than のあとに I と me のどちらを使うか、という話なので A。
Q2. Which sentence does the Cambridge guide say people do not use?
people do not say "You're stronger than I." とあるので B。
Q3. In the passage, what does "formal" mean?
formal は「改まった、正式な」。きちんとした場面に合う言い方なので C。
Students in Japan often learn that "He is taller than I" is correct, because the word "am" is left out at the end. This idea goes back to the 1700s, when grammar writers said "than" must always join two clauses.
Modern dictionaries see it differently. Cambridge's grammar guide uses "You're stronger than me" as its example and says people don't say "You're stronger than I." Oxford's learner's dictionary starts its entry with "I'm older than her."
The American Heritage Dictionary says "than I" on its own can sound unnatural, or even a little pretentious. For formal writing, there is an easy fix. Add the verb and write "than I am." That form still sounds natural today.

日本の生徒は、最後の「am」が省略されているので「He is taller than I」が正しい、とよく習う。この考え方は1700年代にさかのぼる。
当時の文法家たちは、「than」は必ず2つの節をつなぐ語だと言った。今の辞書の見方はちがう。Cambridge の文法解説は「You're stronger than me」を例に使い、「You're stronger than I」とは言わないと書いている。Oxford の学習辞典は、than の項目を「I'm older than her(私は彼女より年上だ)」から始めている。
American Heritage Dictionary は、「than I」で止めると不自然に、あるいは少し気取って聞こえることがあると言う。改まった文章なら、簡単な解決法がある。動詞を足して「than I am」と書けばよい。この形なら、今でも自然に聞こえる。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the main idea of the passage?
今の辞書は than me をふつうとし、改まった文なら than I am でよい、という内容なので B。
Q2. When did the idea that "than" must join two clauses begin?
This idea goes back to the 1700s とあるので B。
Q3. What would the writer most likely suggest for a formal essay?
For formal writing, there is an easy fix. Add the verb and write "than I am." とあるので C。
If someone knocks on your door and announces "It is I," you might wonder whether they have walked out of an old play. Most people say "It's me," and Cambridge's grammar guide describes "It is I" as very formal and not often used. Comparisons with "than" have gone the same way.
Since the 1700s, grammarians have insisted that "than" is a conjunction, so "Pat is taller than I" was supposed to be short for "than I am." The American Heritage Dictionary calls this analysis somewhat contrived and notes that "than me" is common, while "than I" can sound unnatural. Cambridge is more direct. It puts "Not" in front of "You're stronger than I."
Even so, "me" does not work in every sentence. "She loves the dog more than me" can easily be read as "she loves the dog more than she loves me." To say that she loves the dog more than I love it, you need "than I do." Some writers blame the old rule for "between you and I," but the same dictionary notes that the phrase appears in Shakespeare. It still advises avoiding it in formal settings.

だれかがドアをノックして「It is I(我なり)」と名乗ったら、古い芝居から抜け出してきたのかと思うかもしれない。たいていの人は「It's me」と言うし、Cambridge の文法解説は「It is I」をとても改まった言い方で、あまり使われないとしている。「than」を使った比較も同じ道をたどってきた。
1700年代から文法家たちは「than」は接続詞だと主張してきたので、「Pat is taller than I」は「than I am」を短くしたものだとされた。American Heritage Dictionary はこの分析をいくぶん無理があると評し、「than me」はよく使われる一方、「than I」は不自然に聞こえることがあると書いている。Cambridge はもっとはっきりしている。「You're stronger than I」の前に「Not」と書いているのだ。
それでも、「me」がどの文でも使えるわけではない。「She loves the dog more than me」は、「彼女は私よりも犬のほうを愛している」と読まれやすい。「私が犬を愛している以上に、彼女は犬を愛している」と言いたいなら、「than I do」が必要だ。「between you and I」という言い方を古いルールのせいだとする論者もいるが、同じ辞書は、この言い方がシェイクスピアにも出てくると指摘している。それでも、改まった場面では避けるよう勧めている。
