Someone left their umbrella.(だれかが傘を忘れていったよ)
someone は1人なのに、受けているのは their(they の所有格)。
「I would have everybody marry if they can do it properly.」(ちゃんとできるなら、だれだって結婚すればいいと思うの)
でも今、1人の相手に You are kind.

英作文で everyone や someone を受けるときは、their / they / them を思い出してください。he or she を何度も書くより、ずっと自然な英語になります。

Look at this sentence. "Someone left their umbrella." The word "someone" means one person, but "their" usually goes with more than one person. Is this a mistake?
No, it is not. English speakers have used "they" and "their" for one person for more than 600 years. The Oxford English Dictionary has an example from the 1300s.
The writer Jane Austen used it too. In 2019, a big American dictionary chose "they" as its Word of the Year.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
1人の人に they や their を使う話なので B。umbrella は例文に出てくるだけ。
Q2. When is the oldest example in the Oxford English Dictionary from?
The Oxford English Dictionary has an example from the 1300s. とあるので A。2019年は「今年の単語」に選ばれた年。
Q3. In the passage, what does "mistake" mean?
Is this a mistake? No, it is not. の流れから、mistake は「間違い」。正解は B。
In school, most of us learn that "they" means more than one person. But English speakers have long used it for one person whose gender is unknown, as in "Everyone has their own opinion." The Oxford English Dictionary traces this use back to a story from the 1300s, and famous writers such as Jane Austen and William Shakespeare used it.
In the 18th century, some grammarians began to call it an error. The same thing had already happened to "you," which was once a plural word and is now used for one person without any complaint. Today the American Psychological Association accepts singular "they" in academic writing. In 2019, Merriam-Webster made "they" its Word of the Year after lookups for the word rose by 313 percent.

When a reader of the New Bedford Medley complained in 1794 that three women had misused "they" in an essay, the women replied that they had chosen the word on purpose because "we wished to conceal the gender." Their choice had a long history behind it. The Oxford English Dictionary's earliest example of singular "they" comes from a medieval romance copied before 1375, and the linguist Mark Balhorn has proposed that the loss of grammatical gender in the thirteenth century helped open the door for it.
Grammarians in the 18th century attacked the usage as an error, although "you" had already moved from plural to singular and nobody objects to that today. Recent changes are a separate matter. Using "they" for a specific person who is nonbinary is a newer development, and Merriam-Webster added that sense in September 2019.
Dictionaries have also treated the two uses differently. In 2010, the New Oxford American Dictionary called "they" generally accepted after words like "everyone" but less widely accepted with definite nouns. For learners, the safe pattern is simple. Write "Everyone brought their own lunch," and keep the verb plural, as in "they are," even when "they" refers to one person.

「Everyone brought their own lunch.(みんな自分の弁当を持ってきた)」と書き、「they」が1人を指すときでも「they are」のように動詞は複数形のままにすることだ。
