ひとことで言うとタコの複数形は3つもある。シラバスは読み間違いから生まれた言葉!
もくじ
タコは英語で octopus。では、2匹以上のときの複数形は?
答えは 3つ あります。octopuses、octopi、octopodes。
AHD によると、ギリシャ語の platupous(平たい足の)から。

ここは辞書も「perhaps(かもしれない)」と書いている部分です。

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
octopus の複数形が3つあることと、その理由の話なので B。
Q2. What does "octopus" mean in Greek?
The word "octopus" comes from Greek and means "eight feet." とあるので B。
Q3. In the passage, what does "common" mean in "the most common form"?
the most common form は「いちばんよく使われる形」。common は「よくある、ふつうの」なので A。
Merriam-Webster accepts three plurals for "octopus," and each one comes from a different idea. "Octopi" is the oldest, from the early 19th century. People who used it believed the word was Latin, so they gave it a Latin ending.
In fact, "octopus" comes from the Greek word for "eight-footed." "Octopuses" simply treats the word as English, and it is now the most common form. "Octopodes" is the rarest and follows Greek grammar.
The argument is not new. In 1873, a British newspaper laughed at "octopi" and said "octopuses" sounded too awkward for a polite tea table. Dictionaries still do not agree. Oxford's learner's dictionary lists only "octopuses."

Q2. Why did people first say "octopi"?
People who used it believed the word was Latin, so they gave it a Latin ending とあるので B。
Q3. What does the 1873 newspaper story suggest?
The argument is not new のあとに1873年の新聞の例が続くので、この論争が昔からあると分かる。A。
Ask which plural of "octopus" is correct, and the answer depends on the dictionary. Merriam-Webster lists octopuses, octopi and octopodes. American Heritage gives the first two, and Oxford's learner's dictionary gives only "octopuses." The oldest form, "octopi," dates from the early 19th century and rests on a mistake. The word reached English through a modern Latin animal name, so writers treated it like a Latin noun and swapped "-us" for "-i."
But the name was built from Greek "oktōpous," meaning eight-footed. A stranger case is "syllabus." According to American Heritage, Cicero used the Greek word "sittubas," meaning labels for scrolls, in one of his letters. Medieval copyists misread it, early printed editions spread the wrong form, and later a new singular, "syllabus," was made to match it.
So the word on every course outline began as a copying error. Toyota faced a similar puzzle in 2011 and put it to a public vote. More than 1.8 million votes later, "Prii" narrowly beat "Prius" as the plural.

Q1. Which statement best summarizes the passage?
octopi の勘違い、syllabus の読み間違い、Prii の投票を通して、誤りや選択が英語を形づくる例を挙げているので B。
Q2. According to the passage, what did "sittubas" originally mean?
the Greek word "sittubas," meaning labels for scrolls とあるので B。
Q3. What can be inferred from the Toyota vote?
"Prii" narrowly beat "Prius" とあり、1位と2位が僅差だったので、意見が割れていたと推測できる。B。
