Gymnopédie No. 3 is the last of the three Gymnopédies Satie wrote in 1888. The score is marked 'slow and grave.' Over a gently swaying accompaniment in three, a cool melody sings quietly. It is the most solemn of the three, with the feeling of standing before an ancient temple.
No. 3 was published in 1888, the same year as No. 1. Debussy, who met Satie in the early 1890s and became his close friend, orchestrated Nos. 3 and 1 around 1896. He switched their order, so in Debussy's version, Satie's No. 3 is played as 'No. 1.'
Debussy's orchestration was premiered at a concert in 1897, and it helped make the little-known Satie's name more familiar. With harps and soft wind instruments, the arrangement has a pale, delicate color quite different from the piano version. Today both versions are often performed.
This is the third Gymnopédie. It is slow and serious. Satie's friend Debussy made an orchestra version. But Debussy changed the numbers! In his version, this piece is No. 1.

When Debussy orchestrated the pieces, he put Satie's No. 3 first and No. 1 second. So if an orchestra concert lists 'Gymnopédie No. 1,' it might actually be Satie's No. 3. Watch out when reading CD notes and concert programs!
From 1898, Satie lived in Arcueil, a suburb of Paris, and he was known for walking into central Paris almost every day. It was a long way, and he is said to have walked it in a bowler hat, carrying an umbrella. Some say he thought up musical ideas while walking.
Debussy and Satie had very different personalities and styles, but they were close friends for many years. Debussy, who was starting to become popular, orchestrated his unknown friend's music, and this is thought to have been a big help to Satie.
After Satie died in 1925, his friends entered his room in Arcueil for the first time. They reportedly found lots of umbrellas, unopened letters and unpublished music. Satie is said to have let no one into his room while he was alive.
