Gnossienne No. 5 is a piano piece by Satie whose manuscript is dated July 8, 1889. Although it is numbered fifth, it is the oldest known Gnossienne, and it is thought to be the first piece Satie wrote after the Gymnopédies of 1888. The tempo marking is 'moderate.' Its melody, decorated with little ornaments, sings gently and smoothly.
Nos. 1 to 3 have no time signatures or bar lines, but No. 5 has both. Because of this, its shape is clearer than the other Gnossiennes, and it feels easier to follow. 1889 was the year of the Paris World's Fair, and Satie is said to have been inspired by the foreign music he heard there.
This piece was also not published in Satie's lifetime. The composer Robert Caby edited the manuscript after Satie's death and published it in 1968, along with Nos. 4 and 6. The number '5' was given at that time. It is the oldest, yet it ended up with a late number, poor thing.
This piano piece is called No. 5. But it is the oldest Gnossienne! Satie wrote it in 1889. The melody is soft and gentle. It was not published until after Satie died.

The manuscript is dated July 8, 1889, earlier than No. 1 (around 1890). It is the oldest Gnossienne. But because it was published late, in 1968, it got the later number '5.' Its birth order and its number don't match at all.
The Gnossiennes are famous for having no bar lines. But No. 5 has a proper time signature and bar lines. That means the famous 'no bar lines' style came after this piece.
At the 1889 Paris World's Fair, music from around the world was presented, including Javanese gamelan and a Romanian band. Satie is said to have been inspired by the foreign music he heard there. The strange Eastern flavor of the Gnossiennes may have started growing around then.
Later, Satie wrote a piano duet called Three Pieces in the Shape of a Pear (1903). It is said to be his humorous reply when Debussy told him to pay more attention to form. And though it says 'three,' there are actually seven pieces!
