A sad-sounding title, chosen mainly for its lovely sound.

Pavane for a Dead Princess is a piano piece Ravel wrote in 1899, while he was still a student at the Paris Conservatoire. A pavane is a slow, graceful dance from European royal courts of the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1910 Ravel arranged it for orchestra himself, and this version, which opens with a gentle horn solo, also became famous.
The title makes it sound like funeral music for a princess who has died. But Ravel explained that it was not a lament for any real princess. Instead, he imagined a pavane that a little princess might have danced long ago at the Spanish court. He said he chose the title because he enjoyed the sound of the French words. The piece is dedicated to the Princesse de Polignac.
When the pianist Ricardo Viñes gave the first performance in 1902, the piece quickly became popular and was played in many Paris salons. Ravel himself, however, later criticized it harshly, writing that the influence of Chabrier was too obvious and that the form was rather poor. Even so, today it is one of his best-loved works.
This is a slow piano piece by Ravel. He wrote it when he was a student. A pavane is an old, slow dance for kings and queens. The title sounds sad, but Ravel chose it because he liked the sound of the words. Later, he did not like the piece very much!

There is a famous story that, after hearing a very slow performance, Ravel said: 'I wrote a pavane for a dead princess, not a dead pavane for a princess.' He probably wanted it played as a dance, not dragged out sadly.
Later, in a magazine article, Ravel wrote about the faults of this piece himself: the influence of Chabrier was too obvious, and the form was poor. Perhaps he wished people would pay more attention to his more mature music than to this early hit.
There is a theory that Ravel was inspired by portraits of a young Spanish princess painted by Diego Velázquez. However, there is no clear evidence that Ravel himself named a specific painting, so it remains only a theory.
In his last years, Ravel suffered from a brain illness and found it hard to compose or even write. There is a story that, hearing this piece one day, he said, 'That's beautiful. Who wrote it?' No one knows if it is true, but it has touched many hearts.
