The Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, K. 364, is a piece with two soloists, a violinist and a violist, who play together with an orchestra. It is a mix of a concerto and a symphony, and the two instruments talk to each other and sing together as the music moves on. Mozart is thought to have written it in Salzburg in 1779, when he was about twenty-three.
From 1777 to 1779, Mozart traveled to Mannheim and Paris. There, the sinfonia concertante, in which several solo instruments shine with an orchestra, was very fashionable. After returning home, Mozart used this new style to write this piece. The slow second movement is in a minor key, and the two instruments speak to each other sadly, with deep beauty.
Mozart wrote out the cadenzas, the showy solo passages, for this piece himself. The viola is a little larger than the violin and usually hides in the middle of the orchestra, but here it is an equal star. Today it is one of the most important works for violists, and it is often performed by famous pairs of violinists and violists.
This piece has two stars: a violin and a viola. They play with an orchestra. Sometimes they talk, and sometimes they sing together. The slow part is very sad and beautiful. Mozart himself liked to play the viola.

The viola part is written in D major, a half step lower than the piece's key of E-flat. The player tunes the strings a half step higher, so the notes come out at the right pitch. The tighter strings make the viola sound brighter and clearer. This trick is called scordatura.
Mozart was a master of the violin and piano, but he is said to have enjoyed playing the viola in chamber music. In his memoirs, the singer Michael Kelly wrote that when Mozart played string quartets with Haydn and others, Mozart took the viola part.
Concerto cadenzas are often improvised by the players or written by other people. But for this piece, Mozart's own cadenzas survive, and they are still often used today. So we can hear the showy moments just as the composer planned.
The Mannheim orchestra was famous for effects such as the crescendo, where the music slowly gets louder. Near the start of this piece, there is a passage where the orchestra gradually builds up, and many say it shows what Mozart learned on his travels.
