Piano Sonata No. 13 in B-flat major, K. 333, is one of Mozart's brightest and most song-like piano sonatas. It has three movements, and in the first one, smooth melodies roll along happily. Mozart wrote it when he was about twenty-seven, during the early years of his independent career in Vienna.
This sonata was once thought to have been written in Paris in 1778. But detailed research on the paper and handwriting suggested that Mozart probably wrote it in late 1783, when he stopped in the city of Linz on his way back from Salzburg to Vienna. His Symphony No. 36, the 'Linz', was also born there at that time.
The sonata was published in Vienna in 1784. The highlight is the last movement. As in a piano concerto, the pianist plays both the 'orchestra' and the 'soloist', and near the end Mozart even wrote out a cadenza, a showy solo passage. It is a stylish idea that lets one piano feel like a whole concerto.
This is a bright piano sonata by Mozart. The melodies are smooth and sweet. The last part sounds like a concerto. The pianist plays the soloist and the orchestra at the same time. Near the end, there is a special solo part.

It was once thought to come from Mozart's trip to Paris in 1778. But when scholars such as Alan Tyson studied the type of paper, they found it was used around 1783. A single sheet of paper moved the piece's birth year by five years.
A cadenza is a part of a concerto where the orchestra stops and the soloist shows off. Piano sonatas do not usually have one, but the last movement of this sonata has a cadenza written out by Mozart. This is very unusual in a sonata.
In 1784, the Viennese publisher Torricella printed this sonata together with the Piano Sonata K. 284 and the Violin Sonata K. 454. It was a slightly unusual set that mixed piano and violin works.
In autumn 1783, Mozart stopped in Linz and was asked to give a concert, but he had no symphony with him. In a letter to his father, he wrote that he was writing a new one in a great hurry. That became the 'Linz' Symphony, and this sonata is thought to come from the same time.
