Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331, is famous for its last movement, the 'Turkish March'. Its first movement is made of a gentle, swaying melody, called the theme, and six variations in which the theme changes its form. This is a very unusual plan for the first movement of a sonata.
The sonata is thought to have been written around 1783, in Vienna or Salzburg. The theme is a gentle tune in a slow, rocking six-beat rhythm, like a lullaby. In the variations, the notes become quicker, the music turns to a dark minor key, or it slows down and sings softly, as the same tune puts on new clothes again and again. This sonata has no movement in sonata form, which is usually the heart of a sonata.
In 1784, the sonata was published by Artaria in Vienna in a set of three with K. 330 and K. 332. In 2014, part of Mozart's own manuscript of this sonata was found in the National Széchényi Library in Budapest, Hungary, and it became world news. The theme of this first movement was later used by the German composer Max Reger as the theme of a set of orchestral variations.
This is the first part of a famous piano sonata. It starts with a soft, gentle tune. Then the tune changes six times. Each change is like new clothes. In 2014, people found some pages of this music in Mozart's own handwriting.

In 2014, four pages of Mozart's own manuscript of this sonata were found at the National Széchényi Library in Budapest. Some notes were different from the version people knew, and the pianist Zoltán Kocsis gave a performance using the newly found pages.
The first movement of a piano sonata is usually in sonata form, where themes are presented and developed. But K. 331 has variations first, then a minuet, then the Turkish March. It has no movement in sonata form at all, which makes it a rule-breaking sonata.
In 1914, the German composer Max Reger wrote Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart for orchestra. The theme is the melody of this first movement. Mozart's gentle tune is reborn in rich colors for a large orchestra.
This sonata was once thought to have been written in Paris around 1778. But research on the paper of the manuscripts suggested that it dates from around 1783. So it is a work from the time when Mozart was active in Vienna, Turkish March and all.
